Injury didn't cause him to coast back into his own zone
He's a goof

So why did he go play in the WHC if he was injured?

This doesn't change anything... Didn't even occur til Game 6.. And he could obviously still play fine as we went on to the WHC.
I personally think the Caps should move him and go in a different direction.
I'd like to see the Blues make a play for him...he might be exactly what that team needs to get over the bump.

Isn't the Blues internal budget like $54 million or something?
If so, how do they justify gutting their roster to stick Ovechkin in there at nearly 1/5 of their total budget?

No chance Ovechkin goes anywhere.
And I bet he went to the WHC because it's a really big deal over there, obviously in NA guys are looking for every reason possible to get out of it but over there it's huge.

Oh I get it now, the hairline fracture in his foot is all apart of the NHL conspiracy that caused the Capitals to lose.

Then he or his coach should have been picking his shifts better.
No excuse. If he was hurt but still played, hes an exclusively offensive player, he could be on the PP. Put someone else on the ice that will backcheck.

It probably broke from the strain of carrying his team into the playoffs.

Yeah, didn't Backlund want to go but the Flames wouldn't allow it because of his injury.

I just want to point out that the Capitals released this bit of info, and not Ovechkin himself. So he's not really using the injury as an excuse... just the referee bias.

He went to WHC because Russia needs to show well leading up to Sochi.
Caps aren't trading him because he's a very good/great player who, believe it or not, is yet to hit his prime!
But if they did..... Imagine the return!!!
I'd give up 3 1st round picks plus Brodie plus baertschi!

I think ovechkin has a bit more pull with his team than Backlund does. Ovechkin already told the world that he will play in Sochi regardless of whether the team allows him or not.
Not a huge fan of the guy, or his will to win, but I have to appreciate his nationalism.

Over a career point per game in the playoffs. Its to bad that he had a poor showing this post season, gives Ovi haters ammo. Hopefully the Caps figure out that while Ovechkin is a dynamic scorer, I don't believe the is the best leader for the team. He can still wear the C, but they need a take charge gritty two way type of player in that locker room.

Does that mean Holtby, Backstrom, Green, Brouwer, Alzner etc. all have broken feet as well?
It isn't like AO was a one man team or came close to pulling a Tavares and single handidly raising his game to take his team to the play-offs.

AO definitely dragged his team to the playoffs, kicking and screaming. The problem is it appears as though he thought that was enough. It's not.

3 Alex Ovechkin WSH L 48 32 24 56 +2
16 Nicklas Backstrom WSH C 48 8 40 48 +8
17 John Tavares NYI C 48 28 19 47 -2
.. Troy Brouwer WSH R 47 19 14 33 -5
.. Mike Green WSH D 35 12 14 26 -3
A (admittedly superficial) glance at the relevant statistics makes it look like one player on this list did more heavy lifting than the others.
