Rocky Ridge Rec Center
http://www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Recreatio...tic-Design.pdf
So driving by this development are everyday I finally decided to look up what the plans were.
Seems like a nice multi-purpose facility with a rink, gym, library, theatre, wetlands. Not a bad design as well.
Hopefully it hasn't been discussed before but I like it. Opening to be in 2017 sometime.
Also, It says U of C back there. I didn't know there was or there was to be a campus back there?

"I said, the new personal trainer is a *horn honks*".
"What'd he say"
"The trainers a *music plays*"
That or the whole thing will just be a facade.

A bit of snow and that building will disappear into the landscape.

Long overdue and a complete joke!!
Why only build 1 hockey rink? Why not add several indoor soccer fields as well. The city is severely lacking facilities for hockey and soccer.
I am born and raised in the NW and the city hasn't built a pool since Shouldice/Churchill in the NW. Just think how much the NW has grown since the 80's. I don’t even remember the last rink they built. (Winsport aside)
We used to live in RockyRidge. There was a massive baby boom in this city in the mid 2000's, by the time this is built and opened my kid will be driving there.
20 years too late in my opinion.

I was going to say the same thing. It seems like bad planning and very short sighted to only include 1 rink especially in a city where a common complaint is ice time shortages.

Much needed in the NW!
Especially I expect the fitness area will be a better deal than the $2400/yr that Winsport wants.

It's a YMCA, so I think it's safe to say it will be fairly cheaper.
I can't see the floor plan right now, but was at a meeting when they unveiled this to the community and remember there is an additional free skate area beside the actual rink, for those wanting to just ice skate around.

That was not built by the City of Calgary OR the YMCA.
It was originally built as a private facility that was so poorly built the City shut it down and the YMCA eventually took it over.
There were also numerous rumors of fraud and embezzlement when it was built as most of the funds were donations.

I was involved in this project and I can tell you, Rocky Ridge is getting a frickin' sweeeeet facility. Lucky folks over in that area.

I remembered there was a lot of hassle with it, but I couldn't find any background or details on it when I quickly Googled.
Still - new pool, NW.

Such a nice design. Love it. Wouldn't mind if the new arena looked something like that.

Yes a new pool but not funded by your tax dollars and the City of Calgary. The City has fallen so far behind on infrastructure to promote health and fitness it is embarassing. Turf fields both indoor and outdoor as well as new rinks needed to be built 10+ years ago.
Try registering your kids at the Crowfoot Y for anything, it's next to impossible for some programs unless you call in at 12:01am on the day registration opens.
The South soccer bubble collapsed a 5 years ago and those fields have yet to be replaced. 7 indoor soccer fields and 3 turf fields for football at shouldice (built by fund raising as well) for a city of 1.2MM is a total joke.

Rinks around/since ex-Winsport - 2 at South Fish Creek, 1 at Flames Community Arenas (I think there was another, but can't think of it off the top of my head)
So 7 new sheets (inclusive of Winsport) in the past few years.
IMO, Rocky Ridge should have contained at an absolute minimum two new sheets with the provision for 2 more in the future. However pundits would say that 5 new sheets in the NW was enough. (One could make an arguement that the two new sheets out at the Edge school should be sufficient for NW demand.)

I can only imagine how bad things must be in the deep SE. Someone correct me if I am wrong but besides the Shawnessy YMCA there are no recreational facilities serving Mckenzie Lake, Mckenzie Towne, Auburn Bay, Cranston, Copperfield, Douglasdale and now Quarry Park.
