19 injured in shooting at New Orleans second-line parade
http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/12/us/lou...html?hpt=hp_t1
No life threatening injuries.
Sounds like something gang related.

Disgusting that people can't respect the tradition of the parade enough to do their shooting elsewhere. Based on what I've seen of it from Treme, it looks like it should be an awesome time. Also, how do you shoot 19 people and not kill anyone?

Yet another failing of the public school system

Yeah, I guess I'm becoming desensitized to these American shootings, because that's the first thing I thought, too. Really amazing, actually.

So sick of these things.
A friend of mine just moved to Scotland with her husband and new baby as he did not want to raise a family in the US. He's from Ireland, so he's seen a few things already.

This quote bothers me, as its so often about quickly finding people to charge with the crime rather than taking the time to get the right people.

Agreed, Thor.
The Captain made a post in another thread about us entering an era of the politics of self-interest. And what happens there just flows down hill.
I know there are good cops out there, but so often it's just make an arrest, make us look good, and you'll get a promotion or merely get to keep your job.
Everything is productivity and results, no matter what the cost.

That propably describes policing throughout most of history.
We rarely realize how fortunate we have been to live in such good times, and that there is never a guarantee that it will last.

Stop motion surveillance video of the shooting. The suspect is in the lower left hand corner of the frame, white T-shirt, dark pants.
NOPD names 19-year-old Akein Scott suspect in Mother's Day shooting
WWL Link
WDSU Link
Quote:
Scott has two previous arrests, according to sheriff's office records. In February of 2012, he was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a stolen firearm. In April of that year, the district attorney refused the charges.
In March of this year, he was arrested and charged with resisting an officer, illegally carrying weapons, possession of heroin and illegal possession of stolen firearms and illegally carrying weapons with controlled dangerous substance.
Based on court records, all the charges were refused except for illegally carrying a weapon with a controlled dangerous substance. His bond was set at $15,000 on that charge.

Had him on two weapons charges, let him go.
There are many layers to why violent crime is so prevalent in New Orleans, one of which is the fact that witnesses are unwilling to come forward due to situations like this. You could be seeing that person that you turned in back on the block the next day, with a gun and a grudge. Snitches don't get stitches in New Orleans, they get funerals.
Why does this happen? Jail overcrowding, a HUGE backlog of cases in the system, nepotism, possible police informant, etc.
It has been ignored for years by many people as "only happening in the bad neighborhoods" "bad guys killing each other", etc. But since Katrina, it's been moving into areas that were once deemed safe, and too many innocent people are dying.
A corrupt police force, a broken justice system, corrupt politicians, the cycle of poverty, broken homes, poor public education, poor job market (other than the tourism/service industry), there are so many factors that lead to what is going on today.
I'm not a person that shields my children from the realities of the world. In fact, I relish the opportunity to expose them to new and different cultures. I still have intentions of taking them to New Orleans in the near future, but I'd be dishonest if I said that scenes like this don't give me pause. I hate to see it because I love the city so much. The violent crime rate is a massive black eye on a city that should be revered as a national treasure.

Police Arrest Suspect in New Orleans Mother's Day Shooting
Exhaustive article listing all victims with injuries suffered.
One of the injured was 10 year old Ka'Nard Allen. Thankfully, he was only grazed in the cheek. The past year of his life has seen too much violence already:
Quote:
Ka'Nard Allen, 10, does not want to talk about what must be the longest and hardest year of his life. He doesn't want to talk about Mother's Day, when he was grazed by a bullet at a second line parade in New Orleans' 7th Ward, one of 19 people injured in a mass shooting.
He doesn't want to talk about October, when his father, 38-year-old Bernard Washington, was fatally stabbed in eastern New Orleans by his stepmother after Washington allegedly choked and beat her. She has been charged with manslaughter.
And he really doesn't want to talk about his 10th birthday party last May 29, when his 5-year-old cousin, Briana Allen, was fatally shot and a bullet hit Ka'Nard in the neck. The man accused of shooting Briana was arrested last month and, last week, was among 15 people indicted on gang racketeering charges in that incident and many others.

A second suspect has been arrested this morning.
http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/...thers_day.html
I'm wondering if it wasn't the young male seen walking away from the shooter right before he opened fire? He looked young enough to be a minor, which could be why no details are being given right now.
