"Flames GM Feaster Has Options Open Heading Into Off-Season" As per TSN
TSN Article
Love this clear dig at the Oilers:
Quote:
"We want to do it sooner rather than later," he said. "This isn't about let's see if we can finish last for the next three years and have the first pick overall. That's not the direction we want to go."
|

And very happy to hear this:
Quote:
Heading into this June's NHL draft in New Jersey, Feaster has plenty of options open to him due to the fact that the Flames currently have three first-round selections.
"They would include trying to package some things and potentially move up in the draft," said Feaster, who would also consider trading one or more of the picks for a player or players that could help the franchise "from a long-term perspective."
|
Not sure if he's talking about moving up from #6 or from the later picks but either would be a great move depending on what we had to add. This could actually be a very exciting off-season!

Agreed. Can bet he's looking to redeem himself too after dodging the O'Reilly bullet.

It takes two teams to make a trade. Doubt we are able to move up.

Agreed.
"Hey Florida, we'd like to move up to the #1 pick. What do you want?"
"The 6th overall pick and Sven Baertschi."

I'm not. I'd prefer our GM keep his mouth shut and just went and did his job and let the results speak for themselves. Strikes me as arrogant which doesn't even make sense because at present we're terrible.

Realistic to move up or not, it is far better to kick the tires then to assume you cant do anything.

I might be tempt to do this if that's the price to get MacKinnon in the draft.

The drop-off between MacKinnon and, say, Lindholm, is not so big that it justifies trading Baertschi. No way.

More like 6th, 22nd, roster player for 2-4; no way Colorado passes on Seth Jones.

No. Trading Gaudreau would be a huge mistake imo.

No. If the talent gap was that of a normal year and had significant drop off after the top 2-3 then perhaps, but as others have pointed out those being drafted at the 6th pick are not so far below the top few that an organization should consider giving up one of their top prospects.
My 2 cents anyways, I think Jonney is going to be too good to give up for what could be a slightly better player.

Keep the picks, put in the man hours, and get the diamonds. I can guarantee you that at pick 6, whatever the Flames second pick is, and whatever the Flames third pick is, there will be first line, first pairing type players that are available. It is the job of management/scouting to identify these guys. If the Flames trade one of these picks now they can only get two of these guys. Dealing these picks to improve draft status or to pick up second tier prospects who are closer to the show is like admitting defeat. Why do teams trade these young prospects for picks? Because they believe based on a now more extensive look at what they already have that they don't have that much. The only time to employ this strategy is when a squad is close to the Cup. Flames aren't there yet and need to avoid this bottom feeder mentality at this draft.

I would trade him if it meant getting MacKinnon but it would take much more than Gaudreau and the #6 pick.

I'd like to see Feaster keep #6 and go with Lindholm / Monahan.
Maybe then see if he can package St. Louis and Pittsburgh to move up a few spots.
I wouldn't sell the farm to move up from #6 at this point, though.
