I thought the Leafs are not allowed to play a home game on Sundays because of the Sabbath.

And was there not a game way back in the 40s or 50s that was a playoff game on a Saturday night that went into OT and was stopped when the clock hit midnight? I remember reading this in a book once when I was a kid.

Regardless, when was the last time there was a home game in Toronto on a Sunday?

Good question. I always thought maybe the fact they play every Saturday night had a role in that but I can't recall a Sunday game in Toronto come to think of it.

Not that it has anything to do with religion anyway, but Jews would actually prefer Saturday over Sunday, as Saturday is their Sabbath.

i googled maple leafs and sabbath and all i got was offers for black sabbath tickets.

i think the leafs don't typically play sunday is because a lot of thier home games are on Saturday and monday.

I just assume that they don't play Sundays because HNIC has an unholy need for them to play Saturday so that they can fellate them.

the Marlies play lots of Sunday's and the Jays play every Sunday, I can't imagine a rule would exist for the Leafs but not those entities.

Definitely nothing to do with Jewish people; their Sabbath starts on Friday and ends on Saturday. Plus, it wouldn't be the Leafs, it would be the Canadiens (wayyyy more Orthodox Jews in Montreal).

Maybe the NHL assumes they will lose in 4 or 5 games

The Leafs always play at home on Saturday, making Sunday games rare.

Has to be the only league I know of that has a schedule taylored to two teams (Habs and Leafs) to the same day every week and usually at home. Kind of lame IMO in this day and age to see teams get preferential treatment but CBC depends on those games for revenue.

The date was Sunday, May 23, 1999. It was game one of the Stanley Cup semi finals (eastern conference finals), Sabres at Leafs and it was a matinee.

I'm sure the Christian purists in Toronto have nothing to worry about.
It'll be a cold day in Hell if the Leafs even make it to game 6.

There have been a couple since then (one in Nov. 2000 and one in Feb.2003), but it's still pretty ridiculous how seldom they play at home on a Sunday.

I think CBC wants to keep the Leafs and Habs from playing at the same time... so the Leafs get the first saturday, and the Habs get the second. This way they always have 1 of them as a National Game... and don't have to split the feed.

I did not know about the regular season games played on a Sunday. I just knew about the playoff game because the city became so disoriented after finding out a playoff home game would be played on a Sunday instead of a Saturday.

The Canucks also get the second Saturday, but, on TSN.
