Alleged terror plot thwarted by Canadian authorities
got this in my email...
Alleged terror plot thwarted by Canadian authorities
According to reports, Canadian police and intelligence agencies have thwarted a plot to carry out a major terrorist attack in Canada.
CBC News reports that a number of suspects were arrested this morning in Ontario and Quebec and the alleged plotters have been under surveillance for more than a year.
More is expected at a 1:30 pm MST news conference in Toronto.
Link to CBC
Law enforcement officials say the terror suspects arrested today have no connection to the two brothers accused of last week's Boston Marathon bombings.
They also say there is no tie to the former London, Ont., high school friends who joined al-Qaeda and died earlier this year while helping to stage a bloody attack on an Algerian gas refinery.
Sources say the alleged plot disrupted by Monday's arrests was potentially more dangerous than the bombings and hostage-takings planned by the so-called Toronto 18.

Nice. Your link isn't working, but I'm going to guess Montreal? Just have a bad feeling that Montreal will be the place to be attacked if Canada does fall victim to a terrorist attack.

Why Montreal out of curiousity.
I would think that Toronto as the center of Canadian business or Ottawa as the seat of government makes more sense.
Plus Toronto is a gong show of business downtown, it'd be easier to blend in to plant your bombs.

Were targeting a Via train between Toronto and New York.
The suspects were not Canadian citizens
Were linked to Al Queda cell in Iran
Not related to the Boston Bombers

Mind-bottling. Why would you attack Canada? Which of our foreign policies would these people disagree with?

Our support of Israel probably irks these "people".

We need Russia to head back into Afghanistan for 9 or 10 years and keep al-Qaeda busy on their own turf.

Maybe New York was the target and they were caught in Canada before they made their way across the border on the train? I'm just guessing with what info we have so far

they see us as soft and unprepared, they don't like that we're Israel friendly or that we supported the U.S.'s war on terror and cheered when Bin-LAden hit the bottom of the ocean.
With all of us looking at the U.S. bombings maybe they felt that our domestic guard had slipped.
I always get suspicious when it comes to Al Queda in Iran, if IIRC Iran does offer indirect support via training grounds, smuggling operations and funds, and its no secret that Iran is pissed at us over the diplomacy situation.

"........linked to Al Queda elements in Iran" was the most interesting thing I heard in that press conference.
Iran is going to freak out about that.

Why what are we going to do
Cut off diplomatic relations with them.
Intro new sanctions
Maybe launch some cruise missiles at training camps there.
Anything that could be done to Iran has been done, we don't have any more levers, not that levers matter to that country.
Even the Yanks don't have much influence there except for the ability to level every building over two stories tall, and Obama is not going to do that on behalf of Canada.
There's nothing that anyone can really do to Iran anymore.

We have practically the same foreign policies as the US and Britain. We were in fact a major component of the Afghanistan mission and the Harper government is very vocal about its support for Israel (not to mention recent missions in Mali and Libya as well). I would say that more than ever, Canada is asserting itself globally as opposed to just being America's little buddy.

The arrests come as MPs debate an anti-terrorism bill that has been in the works for months but has taken on greater significance in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings.
Bill S-7, the Combating Terrorism Act, includes provisions that make it an offence to leave the country to participate in acts of terror. It also grants police the powers to pre-emptively arrest someone and hold them for three days without charge, and allows for imprisonment for up to 12 months for refusing to testify before a judge in an investigative hearing.
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews issued a statement Monday afternoon commending the RCMP on its efforts, and also thanking the FBI for its assistance in the investigation.
“Today’s arrests demonstrate that terrorism continues to be a real threat in Canada,” Toews said.

Congrats on the RCMP for preventing a terrorist attack, and I agree with the part of the Bill S-7 that makes it a crime to leave the country to participate in terrorism, but what needs to be articulated to me is why we have to give the police powers to pre-emptively detain people for up to 3 days. Looks to me that the already existing elements of the law already allowed for this plot and future plots like it to be stopped.

I don't think that's true, a lot of members of Al-Queda's leadership was living in Iran including Bin-Laden's son in law until he was intercepted by the American's.
Iran acttively helped to smuggle Al-Queda fighters in and out of Iraq, and also sent weapons to them.
The old adage applies here, the enemy of my enemy is my friends.
Iran has never met a anti-western Terrorist group that it didn't like.

But you also have IRGC fighting al Qaeda elements in Syria. Maybe 5 years ago I can see them helping each other but there's gotta be bad blood between the two now

Its also a double down bet for Iran.
If the resistance wins and Al Queda helps seize power they win.
If the standing government keeps power they win.
while they might not be as friendly as they were, they're both still part of the we hate the western powers club and that does make them bedfellows.
