New threads; Don't be afraid to start them
I wish there were more good thread starters on CP. I find that's one of the biggest problems here. I think we have lots of knowledgable, interesting posters, and you see it come out when an interesting thread pops up.
But not very many posters here actually start threads. I think it would be cool if more people stepped up and instead of saying "I'd start this thread, but I'll probably get jumped on for starting a crappy thread", just go "meh, I'll start it and if it sucks, whatever, it'll fall off the first page and that'll be that."
I'll be totally honest, I actually love it when Sliver starts threads. I don't think he's always completely genuine when he starts a thread (aka, he's looking to form a thread topic that'll get people talking), but his threads tend to create entertaining/interesting discussions, imo. Sure some are duds, but again, whatever. Worst case scenario it's a dud and falls into obscurity right away.
Anyways, my point isn't that we need more threads in the style of Sliver, but just that we could use more attempts at either discussion, humour, entertainment or whatever, through people not being afraid to throw an idea up as a thread and see what happens. Sure the Regulator75's and flameswin's of CP are waiting patiently to throw in a one liner as soon as a thread is started for the "thanks", but who cares?
There also seems to be a little too much "Ugggg couldn't this have gone in another thread" on here. Honestly, who cares, if it really should, a mod will likely move it.
...and yes I relaize someone will jump at the chance to say "couldn't this have gone in the gear grinding thread".

I really do not think I've started one new thread since joining CP in 2006.

You felt the need to start a new thread just to let your feelings about Sliver be known?

Good thread flameswin. I've taken a lot of shots when starting a new thread and I don't let it bother me. Got called a drama queen for the draft lottery is a joke thread but it is now 7 pages and counting so there was obviously interest in that discussion.
Honestly sometimes I have to visit other message boards just to keep updated on what's going on in the NHL. That shouldn't happen. A tonne of things go untalked about on here that are a pretty big deal else where.

This thread reminded me about how I never start threads. Then I looked it up and I've started 29...whoops. Last one was over three years ago though. A lot of inanity in my list. Probably why I don't start threads anymore.

Ya I checked mine after reading this and was shocked I had over 100...90% of which came from 4-5 years ago. And from the looks of most of em, its for the best, haha I actually cringed reading a couple.

I thought I never start much threads, but turns out I actually do start a few each year aside from EA NHL related threads and the GTs/PGTs way back.
Looking back at one in the 09-10 season, one thread was about the Flames being basically a bad team, and they needed to start a rebuild. Remember the "sky is falling" posts? Really gives perspective on how frustrating it's been to see the Flames spinning their wheels for so long.

Damn, I've started 35 threads and even one about new thread anxiety. Lol, I've been here way to long.

I thought you raised a valid concern but were just being overly dramatic about it.

Really? The mods had to sub divide the off-topic thread just to make space. As it's going we'll probably end up with politics and religion/spirituality sub forums very soon.
I'm of the opposite position on this one. Too many threads.
I will agree there is an amazing, informed and interesting community. I dont know ANY sports based website with more members or better writen writers. This wad proven when we won that best sports site award so long ago, going up the major sites along all four NA sports.
But I do feel there is a ton of redundacy here. It's not reddit, we don't need to cycle threads hourly.

I've started 75 threads and i'm pretty sure the average number of responses is below 10 per thread, so I will just piggyback off the rest of your threads if that's ok.

I actually hate the mega threads. While I did find it annoying to see two threads per week started about "Now is the time to trade Iginla", I think it is annoying that people need to bump a year old thread (or older) to talk about something... especially if that thread had been dormant a couple of times and was bumped. Now we have a thread about Sven Baertschi being recalled, and we'll have that thread until he retires because everybody is afraid to start a new thread.

I think we have enough threads.
The ones that bug me are the discussions that have already been had. For example the things that you couldn't do is just the same as the what do you regret thread of a few months ago.
All of the Gear Grinder wanna be threads, White people problems, threadicate, etc. Really any of the chat type threads that already have somewhere they could go.
To me a thread should be on a specific topic and the OP should take a position rather than just say discuss. For example this thread is a good thread because it is about a specific topic and the OP makes his position known.
I know I could just not open the threads I don't like but there is another negative effect. The 1st page life of a thread is pretty short on here so the crappy chat type threads that keep getting bumped discourage good discussion in threads with actual specific topics.
Also for Pucklucks draft thread lottery / tanking thread there have been at least 4 threads discussing the identical topic in the past year plus the discussion of it in the tanking thread and the discussion of it in the draft thread. Did we really need to rehash the same old argument?
