Not a huge fan but she was an important artist on the canadian music scene and certainly in the maritimes. Never forget her turn on the Trailer Park Boys. Not a great few weeks for the maritime music scene with Jay Smith (Matt Mays guitarist, Rock Ranger, El Torpedo) passing. And of course New Brunswick born and raised Stompin' Tom.
RIP.

She earned the politically correct public tributes but privately in our addled minds . . . . . we're all wonderng how big the coffin has to be and glad we're not pallbearers.
RIP Rita MacNeil.

She sat on my grandfather's hat on an Air Canada flight back in the late 80's....I feel like I've lost a family member.

when I lived in Charlottetown I was out walking one night, and I just about got hit by a car that was leaving the Burger King. I look up and see the driver giving me this embarassed, apologetic smile, and as I'm walking away I think "hey, that lady looked just like Rita MacNeil". Could it have been...?

I like how being celebrity starstruck negates any vengeful feelings of lawsuit rage

To say the community is in shock is an understatement.
Flags at city hall are at half mast.
Information Morning (yes I'm an old man) was almost all Rita related today.
I've never seen my newsfeed on Facebook flooded like this before.
I never really met her other than in passing. Hell of a lady, some of the stories that come out make you realize that her singing voice wasn't her best talent. It was her kindness and personality.
I wasn't sure the reception she'd get on a board like this due to most posters being in Alberta, but it's nice to see she touched the landscape of Canadiana and not just Cape Breton.
If you ever get a chance, I'm told her tea room is delightful (I've actually never been, live in a place your whole life and never see the sights)

You really have no class, do you?
By all accounts she was a better human being than you've proven yourself to be on this forum.

My grandmother was Rita Mcneil sized, and her coffin was not out of the ordinary, and an extra 200 pounds spread amongst 6 young pall bearers at the time was nothing. We managed just fine.
And RIP to a Canadian icon.

By all accounts, the woman was incredibly kindhearted. I'm sure she had many good friends and family who will miss her deeply. She was as much a Canadian icon as Anne Murray and Stompin' Tom (who we also recently lost.)
For those that want to make jokes about her weight - go ahead. She proved many times that she could laugh it off so you're not going to offend her or her family. You're only going to display your own crassness.

She was a favorite of my mother-in-law. And I really enjoyed her specials with The Men of the Deeps. RIP, Ms McNeil.
