A developing story . . . . two Russian airliners which left from the same airport have crashed nearly simultaneously in different parts of Russia. The USA State Department has issued a statement indicating it is "following developments closely."

Its early but the timing of the crashes and the State Department note might indicate a suspicion of terrorism.

I don't think it's far-fetched to say this is probably an act of terrorism.

That, or an extremely inept crew of airplane servicers on the runway didn't do their jobs properly. However, the fact that these planes were flying out of Moscow is reason enough to suspect terrorist motives.

Typical CNN, talk about an international terrorist attack (I know it hasn't been confirmed but let's not kid ourselves) for a little while and then go back the the "more important news" like Howard Dean!!!!

What a joke

Interesting....CNN.com doesn't have it listed as breaking news and there is not a single mention of terrorism or speculation of terrorism in the article they've posted.

Are they talking about it that way on the air?

No other news agencies are really concerned about this at the moment either. It's not just CNN.

CNN has a different story up now. Still doesn't mention terrorism.

Their earlier story (which was not the lead story) seemed to imply that the planes crashed into each other.

I'm guessing non-Al-Qaeda-affiliated Chechen terrorists.

Eye witnesses claim to have seen at least one plane explode in the air...

Except they crashed way far apart?

They definitely didn't crash into each other, they just found the crash site of the first plane.

Yeah they are far apart but it was either implied or so poorly/quickly written that it was hard to tell what happened. Or, and this is more likely, I just skimmed over it and got it all wrong. What I immediately thought when I read the headline "two airliners crash" was that they hit each other. They didn't.

Hence the term developing" story.

The original MSNBC link I posted makes it clear one plane crashed about 125 miles from Moscow and the other in a region about 600 miles away.

Both appear to have gone down at the same time. One explosion was seen on one.

An explosion might suggest timing devices on both to account for the simultaneous nature of the destruction.

When Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Andrey Denisov was told of the initial report of two near-simultaneous crashes, he said, “Now we have to see if there’s terrorism.”

I saw it on the CNN ticker.

Right above the Ticker it read "BREAKING NEWS: Russian plane crash"

Link on CNN with some info:

http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/08/24...rash/index.html

So the planes took off minutes apart and vanished within 3 minutes of each other. Scary stuff. Very scary stuff.

CNN had a scroll saying Russian news agency Interfax is reporting one of the planes sent a "hijack" signal just before it crashed.

I would think it SHOULD be harder to get a bomb on a plane in Russia than in the US.
