2012-13 NCAA Basketball thread
If this lockout persists I will be much more active in this thread than usual.
Wichita State lost 4 starters and everyone is in love with Creighton (rightfully so) so they've been picked 4th in the Missouri Valley this season. I have hopes that they will do better.
Anyway, 2 Canadians have found their way to Wichita, including Andrew Wiggins older brother.

Went to the MSU - St. Cloud exhibition game on Friday night, and while it wasn't the blowout it likely should have been I liked what I saw from MSU. Very athletic but still an Izzo team, so the fundamental stuff will be there when it counts. I'm a little concerned about turnovers, a few of these guys seem a little too loose with the ball, but they have time to put it together before the Big Ten season. Gary Harris is an absolute stud.

Some big stories over the offseason were:
1. UCLAs freshman eligibility. (Kyle Anderson is allowed but Shabazz still awaiting approval from NCAA)
2. Kentucky reloading after losing their best 5 players and now top 3 in the polls (probably too high).
3. NC State won the preseason poll in the ACC, and now Maryland has Dez Wells so that conference is looking pretty strong and will only get stronger with the addition of Pitt/Syracuse/Notre Dame in the coming years.
4. Biggest story is probably Calhoun retiring at UConn. I am really interested to see how that program does without him. Don't think it'll be in good shape really.
I'll be watching quite a bit of ball over the weekend.
Hopefully catch some of Baylor/Lehigh, Kentucky/Maryland, Ohio St./Marquette
WVU joins the Big12 and lost Kevin Jones who dragged 10 other guys into the tournament. Huggins says the team is night-and-day better over the offseason but I'll wait and see how they manage without KJ. I do expect this team to make the tournament as a 6-8 seed or so.
Gonzaga will be a huge test Monday night. That might be a top 10 team for most of the year.

To say Jack Taylor had the hot hand Tuesday night would be an understatement.
The Grinnell sophomore guard dropped 138 points during a rout of Faith Baptist Bible, easily rewriting the collegiate scoring mark previously held by Bevo Francis of Rio Grande. Grinnell, a Division III school in Iowa, won 179-104.
Taylor was 52-of-108 from the floor and drained 27-of-71 3-pointers. He added seven free throws on 10 attempts in 36 minutes.
Francis held the NCAA scoring record with 113 points against Hillsdale in 1954. In 1953, Francis had 116 against Ashland Junior College. Frank Selvy is the only other player to reach triple figures, scoring 100 points for Division I Furman against Newberry in 1954.
The previous Grinnell record was 89 by Griffin Lentsch last Nov. 19 against Principia.

Wichita State was able to win the Cancun Classic with a 12 point victory over a good young Iowa team last night. In typical Gregg Marshall coached fashion, this team seems to get its points from different people each night and are consistently outrebounding their opponents.
They've got a decent Tulsa squad next week here in Wichita (but not on campus) and then go to Air Force and Tennessee before closing out the non-conference schedule at home against a tough Northern Colorado team and Southern Mississippi. Then it will be conference schedule time and time to see if this team is going to challenge Creighton for the MVC title.
Should be fun!

Rick Majerus passed away today at the age of 64.
One of the great basketball coaches of the last 30 years. Huge loss.

I know it is late but 38-37 Georgetown-Tennessee?
Can these teams be demoted to Division 2 mid season?

Wichita State has to play at Tennessee soon. This is a good sign!

I like Georgetown quite a bit this year. Really like what I've seen from Otto Porter. Also every team should be afraid of playing a Cuonzo Martin team.

You like 38 points? I am sure that will be a real stud team this year, watch out!

Yeah I like their game. If you saw them go to OT against Indiana you might too.

How many seconds of Georgetown have you even watched? I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's zero.

Wichita State is 24th in the AP poll this week. Should be interesting to see how this young team handles that.
To be honest, they haven't exactly played a great game yet.

Looks like the big east isn't going to last through the weekend as a conference. As a vcu fan, very curious to to see how this all shakes out. The rumor du jour right now is the big east catholic schools poaching the a10 for a new conference, with vcu and gonzaga listed as possibilities of joining the new conference.

It is absolutely ridiculous that the NCAA is holding Myck Kabongo hostage right now. Texas is terrible without him as their freshman point guard is a turnover machine. They would have maybe one loss with him instead they are looking completely lost out there. If he did something really improper suspend him for the whole season. If it was a slight infraction give him some games off. My assumption right now is that they think he did something improper, but have zero evidence so they are going to announce that he is not suspended after being held out of 10-15 games which is a total bs move.

My guess is that Myck won't change much. The team is way more broken than just him.

The Big East has been dead for a while now, this is the best possible news for the survivors.
