Trade? Whatabout your worst deal? Lets gget some banter going here....the Vets can let the newbs in on how they were burned...or burned someone else.
What deal would you like a do-over on?

Newbs....what are you finding in discussions since arriving? Tougher than you thought? Lots of back and forth stuff?

I don't think I ever made one single good trade in the CPHL. The only deals that didn't completely blow were the one where I sent Tanabe, Visnovski, and Carter to Washigton for Handzus and Kalinin. The next week Washington changed GM's and I was able to get Carter back for my 1st round pick (31st overall) and 1.5 million in cap. Other than that I was terrible and hence why ownership canned my ass twice!!!!

Im in.

I guess Mellanby from the Oilers to the Canucks for a third rounder was a steal for the Canucks. Would I do it over. You bet. I had a few GMs say I lost a lot in the Samsonov deal…. I did, and I know that. But it’s hard to loose a deal when you get Samsonov.

I found everyone is for sale here in the CPHL. I myself targeted 3 players I really wanted when I came into the league …… really wanted. I was told basically. …Haha... good luck… I now roster two of the three …… just missing Zetterburg.

I did find that if there is a player you want, he is available; the question is are you willing to pay the price… usually not, but there is a price….

I offered Grant (wild) maybe 10 offers for Samsonov, and he did come back with a price. It was a high one ….. but I knew its time to *&%* or get off the pot.

Well all of my trading experiences have been fun….. was I taken to the cleaners in any deals? Could be…. But they all make sense too me when structuring a team with a hard cap. The thing I like is everyone has different needs….

Top 3-summer nonsense from a wookies view:

4.1 mill for Cory Cross

6 mill + a second rounder for ....... a doughnut? Ouch

And rumors circling the Devils offering 5 first round picks + for a RFA signing……. Crazy ….. ohhhhh did I say that out loud

Have a good one, keep your chin strap tight.

I remember a deal I made in my first career as a CPHL GM back with the Pens....way back in Oct 03...(queue Wayne's World "dooddley doo, dooddley doo")...

I traded Sergei Fedorov, Anson Carter, Martin St.Louis, and Scott Stevens for Keith Primeau (and his MASSIVE $9m per year contract), Patrick Elias, Brendan Witt, Patrick O'Sullivan, and 2004 3rd pick.

I spent the next 7 weeks in the proctologists office trying to get the GM's foot removed.

My observations:

The Pens and Hawks have made a lot of good moves filling some important holes including the always tough #1 goalie spot. Look for both teams to be amongst the most improved.

UFA nutiness has been interesting. Are the agents regretting signing so many of the pending UFAs prior to the July 1st turn? Or is the fact so few UFAs were on the market what drove up the price? Will this impact how UFAs are handled this season?

Ducks made an interesting move trading Roenick and Ruutu in the same deal. Didn't mind the Roenick part but I wish I had taken a crack at Ruutu?

Edmonton paid a stiff price for Samsonov but he's the type of player that could put them over the top.

LA's been the most active of the noobs and has made a lot of strong moves and a couple of questionable ones. The Stefan deal was one that I thought was tipped in favor of the Panthers but I could be proven wrong if he fulfills potential.

My team's highlight - Getting Malkin after countless cracks at him.
Lowlight - Missing out on Ruut.

The trade that made me scratch my head:

Nordiques got:
1. Modin, Fredrik (LW)
2. 2005 1st Round Draft Choice (fla)
3. 2005 1st Round Draft Choice (sj)

Hawks got:
1. Brendl, Pavel (RW)
2. Hunter, Trent (RW)
3. Kolnik, Juraj (RW)

My highlight:

Getting Mike Leclerc and a 3rd for 1st(min)

The Panthers had 3 1sts in the draft already so they felt they were able to move their latest 1st for a quality top 6 winger and another pick.

This summer the Hawks have made some good deals for the team and some that are a bit questionable by some.

On the good side, Rob Blake leading the Hawks young D this season, was aquired for Phillipe Boucher and a couple of picks. This deal was an obvious salary dump for the Ducks, but we were happy to be in the right place at the right time to snap up Blake.

Esche for Dennis was a toss up, but getting Erat and Krajicek in the deal put it over the top for the Hawks. Krajicek could be a flop but he is a favortite, we have had an eye on him since Florida drafted him. We have high expectations for Erat also. I really liked that deal as a personal favorite.

Sending Leopold and Sjostrom ( and Afinogenov) to the Flames for Phillipe Boucher and Freddie Modin nearly make me puke. I was sick about that deal. But in the end I traded Boucher for Blake and Freddie for Trent Hunter. Hunter was a big part of the deal that got us St Louis. So I suppose I should stop whining about the deal with the Flames. Axel will agree I am sure :P

Then there was that deal that sent Modin and the couple high 1sts to the Nords. But refer to the deal for St Louis and it doen't look too bad now

You know, everyone bitches about Cory Cross's salary... but that was the cost of doing business... I mean, lets look at the other two high-profile UFA defensemen:

Wild- Dick Tarnstrom - 72OV, 66DF - $4.76m x 3
Jackets- Cory Cross - 71OV, 72 DF - $4.1m x 3
Rangers- Richard Matvichuk - 69OV, 69DF - $3.5m x 3

Really doesn't look that anomalous... that was the market this year. I wonder if teams are whining nonsense because three veteran GMs knew that the UFA market means overpayment, prepared for it, and acquired solid defenders for no assets but excess cap which they all had.

Which explains a lot about the Panthers roster :P

Actually it was a good deal for the Habs, given what they are trying to accomplish right now.

And it was a good deal for the Hawks, given what we are doing and what we have to work with

Interesting topic. I'll have to think about this. I've made some major stinkers myself, but made some decent trades as well.

After learning the hard way that having a true #1 goaltender is everything, I went out and got one. Of course, it came at a price, but don't many of the trades?

The UFA madness was interesting. What can I say? If you have the money, spend it. Some teams worked hard last season grabbing cap for this year, and other teams earned extra money by having success. Good for them. Enjoy it!

More GMs are interested in now, rather than the future. I don't blame them.

Some GMs like to trade, while others do not. I think both types of GMs are good at what they do and it proves for interesting dates in this game: trading deadline, a big losing/winning streak etc.

Yeah, I don't take it personally... its just I felt that people needed to realize that it really wasn't outside the norm for this year's market... which is actually lower than the past few FA periods, where players like Cross might have even received 5m.

I understand your perspective completely Matt. If you can add a guy for nothing but salary, AND you have the room then why not? A lot of teams ended last season with a ton of cap and nothing to show for it. I thought getting Cross was a great move for you.

ALOOTT of back and forth and alot of times NO deal in the end lol...

The deal I made that I really liked was for Pitkanen...althoug I gave up my first along with Sydor. I got myself one of the finest young blueliners in the game in Pitkanen.

The signings of Cross, Matvichuk made me scratch my head wheres I got a better dman Quint at only 1.6M er year.

hmmmm, not sure which trade I like the best. I like trading so it does not matter much, as for the UFA signings I have cap so it does not matter what the other teams think, needed a dman.............

senators have 2 question marks on deals.

First trading Morrison and spare parts away for Kovalev.

If kovolev can regain his scoring from we should do very well this year.
But giving Morision away was tough as well as he played well in ottawa.

second was moving Bates and Smith for Fisher and Raflski. Well Rafaski is a definate upgrade over smith its the points lost between Bates and Fisher that concerns me. bates played very well for me last year. Fisher though is a very good young player with a great DEF rating. and was only rated 1 point lower than bates OV and is younger. In the Sim we may lose out

3rd Bondra and Picard(D) for Kozlov and Arkipov. we lose a quality guy like bondra who played very well for us last year. his place was taken by Kovalev though and he was not spring chicken at 36 years old. So we get a younger playmaker in Kozlov (younger is realative to bondra) and Arkipov a player that has skills but has yet to pull them all together.

Over all we are happy with the direction of the team but some of these could bite us.

I have made a few trades.....

Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues

Straka, Martin (LW)

for

2005 1st Round Draft Choice (det)
2005 3rd Round Draft Choice (sj)

----> really resupplied my ECHL with good players.... not just the crap that was there to start with (other than Howard and Weller). But left me with a hole in the center that i hope to fill with a cheaper player.

New York Rangers and Washington Capitals

Salmelainen, Tony (RW)
2005 5th Round Draft Choice (van)

for

Murray, Marty (LW)

----> Needed some depth on the wings... plus i needed to get rid of the oilers prospect.

Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers

2005 2nd Round Draft Choice (stl)

for

Kaspar, Lukas (RW)

----> get some young AHL depth that i can move into the line up this year.

Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings

Ahonen, Ari (G)

for

Pihlman, Tuomas (LW)
Meidel, Vaclav ©

----> increased depth in AHL and ECHL. I should not have made this deal in hindsight.... Ahonen is a pretty good prospect.

Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers

Kozlov, Slava (LW)

for

Brind Amour, Rod (LW)

----> I really like this deal... wash in salary and age.... and a guy i like better.

Washington Capitals and New York Rangers

Pitkanen, Joni (D)
Konowalchuk, Steve (LW)

For

Berard, Bryan (D)
Gordon, Boyd (RW)
2005 2nd Round Draft Choice (bos)

---> ooooo.... lost Pitkanen..... but I like Gordon, and Berard is a step up for now..... this one may come back to really bite me in the ass.

Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals

Matvichuk, Richard (D)
Shvidki, Denis (RW)
Barnes, Stu (RW)
Stone, Ryan ©
Richards, Mike ©

for

Kapanen, Niko ©
McDonald, Andy ©
Dimitrakos, Niko (RW)
2005 2nd Round Draft Choice (sj)
2005 2nd Round Draft Choice (stl)

----> had to shed some serious Salary when i took over the team.... and got 3 very servicable forwards back, as well as getting a few draft picks.... I really should of tried to have Richards out of the deal... may bite me in the ass too.

Overall..... i think that i have really taken my team and turned it into something I like better... rid myself of a bunch of overpriced, soft players.. and picked up a lot of solid two-way guys....

Future: Looking for a 2nd line centerman or possibly a top line LW.

League wise.... Matvichuk and Cross signings were kind of mind boggling to me...

Favorite was with Minny....

I received:

1. Niedermayer, Scott (D)
2. Steen, Alexander ©
3. Chipchura, Kyle ©
4. 2005 3rd Round Draft Choice ()
And he got

1. Timonen, Kimmo (D)
2. Malkin, Evgeni ©

Yeah, I gave up Malkin, but got Steen and Chippy in return, was damn psyched about that.
