Default SPECULATION: Flames to make a run at RFAs?

With the Flames clearing a tonne of cap space, including the possibility of trading Kipper, is there a chance they overpay for a young RFA this summer to build their franchise around?

Here is a list:, there are some pretty nice names. At a minimum, they can drive up the market price.

You would prob need a 2nd rounder for that and we don't have one.

But yeah I'll forgive Feaster if he signs Clutterbuck.

Since we cannot use other team's draft picks we've acquired to offer sheet RFAs, not a single one of those RFAs are worth Sam Reinhart or Aaron Ekblad.

I expect that with all the cap space, they will go after plenty of UFA's.

Do you mean offersheet? Because that would mean throwing in our pick which will be a top 3 pick.

Other than Pietrangelo, no one is worth it. If we got Pietrangelo though for our 2014 (instead of Ekblad), then I'd be happy.

Looking into the cupboard, I think this type of move would be best for the second/third year of the rebuild. I would imagine our first rounder in 2014 would be pretty high...

Well, we don't have a 2nd in 2013 but we do in 2014.

So as long as the offer sheet is tendered after the draft (which it would have to be, as players aren't RFAs until July 5th this summer), it becomes 2014 picks as compensation.

Wait to see how the rest of the moves shake out before worrying about off-season moves. Still work to be done.

If I were to look at the upcoming off-season i might look at teams that ill be over the cap and look at players who will be getting a raise. There are going to be a lot of teams that cannot retain good young players this summer. I think the Flames look at the trade deadline as a sellers market and the summer as a buyers market. Sell high and buy low.

Iggy's a free agent next year, heard he has relations in Calgary.

That's a sexy list. If you scroll down a bit there are a few names I wouldn't mind in Flames uniform. Henrique is a good young centre on that list. It's just a matter of what picks are going back as compensation and if the Flames have them/want to give them up.

Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk certainly are.

Free agency starts july 1, so rfa offer sheets would be compensated with 2014 picks

Well, actually, yes, I'd say Pietrangelo is worth one of them.

But to offer sheet him, it would require the Flames to give up four 1st rounders. We're not competing any time soon.

Would you be willing to potentially give up Sam Reinhart, Connor McDavid, Tyler Benson, etc., for Alex Pietrangelo?

Depends if St. Louis misses the playoffs this year. Remove Pietrangelo from that team and their 2014 is looking prettier

No team will be that bad with the 3rd best defenseman in the game.
