Default Cammy's trade value compared to Iginla (1 yr ago)

Cammy is 30 yrs old, has scored 11G in 30 games (30 goal pace in 82 game season), and he has 1 year left at $6.0M. He, like Iggy, has NTC. It seems like there is very low expectation that a playoff team would offer much for him. Why? Is it because his high cap hit scares teams away next year? Is it because the cap is going down next year?

A lot of the "talking heads" lament that Iggy's value would have been exponentially more had he been moved 1 year ago. I am not so sure. $7.0M cap hit is a lot to fit into the budget of a contending team with other quality players to retain.

So what is Cammy's trade value at this year's deadline? How would that value compare to next year's deadline?

Iggy had a NMC. Cammi has a NTC and has no say if he is traded to any team on the list of teams he will agree to go to.

Flames need to eat some salary if they want a good return.

One thing to remember is that we can always eat part of Cammy's salary next year to get a better return if a it appears that now is a good time to make a trade. There are probably a lot of teams interested in him at 4.5M vs 6M.

I would sit on Cammy until next deadline. Might be worth another 1st in next year's draft when we could be bereft of assets to trade. Being the go-to guy on the PP next season might just inflate his scoring and make him a hot commodity. Plus, his cap hit will be manageable for any team and that will increase his value more. Right now, he's not a $6 million player heading into next season with the reducing cap.

Why would we even keep Cammy right now? We have nothing to offer him other than a rebuilding team that won't make the playoffs let alone be a contender for years to come. Not really appealing from his point of view if you ask me. This is a great draft to be stock piling for and I hope Feaster has find a good home for him.....and if it helps to seal the deal eat some of his salary too!

Looking at tonight's JBouw deal, it is obvious that the 6.68 cap hit for next season creates a drastic reduction in his trade value (unless you are willing to take back salary under the new CBA).

Seems like Kipper's cap hit next year may be an issue as well, although that is moot when you consider how poor his numbers are this year.

Sounds like any trade for Cammy would require taking significant salary back.

Looking at Iginla, I am sure that trading him 1 or 2 years ago would have been very difficult as well. 7.0M was a huge hit for a player of his age. Calgary could justify such a salary because he was the face of the franchise. Not sure many teams would have had room for him for 1 or 2 full seasons. So I think his trade value would have been drastically lower than the talking heads might now suggest. I am not sure the return would have been significantly better than it was in 2013.

Question. Under the new CBA can a trading team retain some of the salary actual dollars, or cap hit? Or either?

His cap hit is too high. The Flames could put him on waivers and no teams would claim him. The only way a trade happens, is if the Flames take a bad contract back (like the trade the Flames acquired Cammi on for Bourque).
