Icon48 NHL to look at reducing size of goalie equipment (and more GM Meeting news)

Looks like the only thing the GMs agreed on today was to reduce the size of goalie equipment:

Chris Johnston@reporterchris3m
Colin Campbell says the NHL is interested in reducing the size of goalie equipment.

Pierre LeBrun@Real_ESPNLeBrun1m
Colin Campbell confirms GMs recommendation is to further reduce some goalie equipment. Next step is tackling it at Comp Committee level...

Darren Dreger@DarrenDreger1m
Colin Campbell describes quest to reduce size of goalie equip as a "frustrating project". More reductions coming with PA imvolved.

Luongo's trade value suddenly plummets.

Didn't Lou claim that if they made the nets bigger or reduced goalie equipment he would quit? Can't find the original article right now.

Campbell will quickly start tripping over things like:

Did the goalie 'intentionally' put on oversized equipment?
The goalie was 3 seconds late to the dressing room - must have been an honest mistake.
This goalie is a repeat offender, but is a star player.. hmm

More news from GM meetings:

Darren Dreger@DarrenDreger2m
Coach's challenge too complicated to pass. More discussion on criteria needs to happen before taking next step.

Darren Dreger@DarrenDreger54s
CCampbell says additional vid review might be considered on dbl-minor penalty for HS, however, coach's challenge too complicated to adopt.

Renaud Lavoie@RenLavoieRDS4m
Face offs were discuss. GMs thinks its taking to long before the puck is drop.

David Alter@DavidAlter59012m
Sharks GM Doug Wilson said there was a lot of talk on hybrid icing and the trapezoid which is part of it (player safety)

Pierre LeBrun@Real_ESPNLeBrun1h
GMs today in the room were overwhelmingly in favor of grandfathering visors. Now it's up to NHLPA this summer to get feedback from players

Darren Dreger@DarrenDreger1h
Good support for eventual mandatory visor use in NHL. Could start with all entry level players. Percentage of players would increase.

Mike Zeisberger@Zeisberger1h
NHLPA exec Schneider says union will look at grandfathering in visors. Last time they took player poll on it was 2009, 72% vote against.

John Shannon@JSportsnet1h
NHLPA's Mathieu Schneider certainly gave the impression the union's stance on Visors has changed.

John Shannon@JSportsnet3m
Bottom line on GMs meetings: Coaches Challenge is too complex...Hybrid Icing is getting further review...Visors too...improved SO protocol.

Pierre LeBrun@Real_ESPNLeBrun2m
NHL goalie guru Kay Whitmore says the specific goalie equipment recommendation is (1) to shorten the height of the goalie pad above the knee

Pierre LeBrun@Real_ESPNLeBrun1m
And (2) to make sure the knee pad is less bulky and more conforming.

David Alter@DavidAlter5902m
Majority of GM's want hybrid icing next year, players said they would rather no-touch or status quo. No middle ground there.

Opening up the five-hole.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't find five-hole goals as exciting as other ones. Kind of like a lay-up vs. a dunk. They count the same, but top shelf has more style.

Depends on the goal. There are some great five hole breakaway/shootout goals. A player does a nifty move to get the goalie moving side to side and then shoots through the five hole. (did my best to take all the inuendo I could out of that).

Glad they're addressing the faceoffs. Just drop the damn puck.

Yes he did say that a few years back now. Although I believe he has backtracked on that now.

His agent probably reminded him he wouldn't get paid.

IMO the width of the pads is what we need to look at.

Look at where the goalies leg is actually covered, and how much extra padding their is on each side of that. You can't tell me there isn't and inch or so that could be trimmed off there without impacting the goalies safety.

So lame. I honestly don't get what's so difficult about the coach's challenge. Is there grey area? Sure. There is in almost every rule.

I just think it'd be nice to be able to challenge things like goalie interference, dives or even crucial offsides/icings. If the coach chooses wrong, they can be penalized a bench minor for 2:00.

I have no problem believing they're looking at restricting equipment sizes (further than they already do), but I'll believe it's going to happen as soon as I see it happen.
