That's big news. Although I believe they already have a successor for him (can't remember his name though).

The law says they have an election within 30 days. There are two possible sucessors in Nicolas Maduro and Diosdados Cabello, both from within the same party which could contribute to some unease and fracturing though.

I think that this could be a great day for the Venezuelan people though; chavez didn't do a lot for the average Venezuelan and caused a lot more poverty and hardship.

Do you think this will bring about change? I don't know much about Venezuela, but I would suspect this is not a surprise for those in the know.

It could be interesting to watch.

Now that the president for life has died, hopefully they can get the country on the right track.

Chavez was a bigoted clown. He was also a despot who changed his country's constitution to allow himself to stay in power for life. His death upsets me in no way.

I think its too hard to predict. One of them is a trusted ally and the other is fairly hardline. Maduro was a bus driver who rose to union leader and was recently promoted to VP by Chavez. Cabello is the hardliner here.

Here is a very good article on Chavez and a little more detail on his ruling and death.

I'm surprised he lasted this long, figured he would die at Christmas when he had pneumonia.

Good riddance.

I hope that things over there get better, but I'm not very optimistic. If they do, I guess I might visit Venezuela after 9 years living here.

No a dictator died. He doesn't deserve any more respect than the basic democratic rights he stomped all over during his life.
