Blackhawks start among best in history
Among the 40 or 50 Feaster threads and the ridiculousness of the Calgary Flames over the last few days, can we take a second and discuss how the Blackhawks start this season is actually pretty remarkable?
Did anyone expect this? I know I didn't. NHL.com has a short video quickly talking about their start, but I haven't seen it mentioned much here even though it is noteworthy.
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=6...d=nhl:topheads
I think that Mike Johnson there makes a few good points. All things considered in terms of parity of the league, the condensed schedule and travel / back to backs... their ability to not only stay healthy but win a ridiculous amount of games is pretty amazing.
I'm not a big Blackhawks fan but I do think it's impressive and noteworthy enough for a little discussion. What is it about them that makes them just so good? If you compare them to those other teams in history that had such good runs, this team statistically looks like one of the best teams of all time?

I for one blame Feaster for this, the total incompetence from Ken King down...oh wait what?

Have they lost in OT? back in the day you wouldn't get a point for that. Honestly I don't know if they have or just the shootout
Flames should have had them

Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Keith, Seabrook (Thats an amazing core).
Plus with their goalies both stepping up as well as their younger players.
Are all keys to their success.

Well the Flames incompetence to protect a lead for 34 seconds is partly to blame

Their three losses have all been in a shootout.

Hot early, dead early.
First round playoff exit. The Fickle Finger Of Fate doesn't like showoffs.

Huh? The last two modern era teams with records this good (06-07 Ducks and 84-85 Oilers) each won the Stanley Cup after their starts.

kind of funny if they could clinch a playoff spot playing just over half the season...They are still 4 games shy of the half way point. Truly amazing what they have done.

Just think of all the teams the Hawks have played so far it was the Flames that were seconds away from defeating them in regulation.

I figure they clinch with 7 more wins. They should have that in 2 weeks.

Yeah those teams on the bubble would need to play close to .600 clip the rest of the way to get to 53ish points. Probably closer to 8 wins, which still isn't to shabby when you have 28 goes at it.

The one thing the Blackhawks did was get their top end core guys signed for reasonable cap hits. The core of Toews, Kane, Sharp, Keith, Seabrooke, and Hossa is as good as there is. They dealt away other parts for good returns in Ladd, Bufuglien, Barker, Versteeg, and Brouwer to help get their current group of support guys. They made the right choice on a guy like Hjalmarsson, while letting Niemi walk. Tough choices, but they made them, and look to have made the right ones.
