The government is looking for public consultation on amendments to the Condominium Property Act in Alberta. There is an online feedback for for the public to participate. The link is:
http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/2068.cfm
The Act has not had substantial changes since 2000 and i would suggest that the industry has changed significantly since then.
If you own a condo or work in the industry, it is very important that you participate in this process. If you have additional comments which the survey does not let you properly convey, then write or email your MLA and Service Alberta.
Items to consider discussing:
Insurance deductibles
Educational or licensing of property managers
Access to Condo Corp records
reserve Fund Study Providers
turnover from the Developer
Conversion of older buildings into condos
Bare Land Condominium maintenace and repair
Chargebacks to owners who cost the orporation money by their actions or inactions
Plus a lot more
This is an area i deal with daily and have been doing a bunch of public education events lately. There is no doubt in my mind that public participation in this process is needed to keep the amendment process moving and on the government's agenda. Service Alberta advises about 1500 responses thus far, which is good, but the more we have the better it will be.
You have until April 2nd to respond.
Board members should be writing all of the owners to encourage their participation as well. It is important to get the perspective of owners as well as Board members, as the perspectives can differ at times.
