Any word on how severe it is? If it is a complete cut of the tendon, isn't that pretty much it?

I feel he was trying to do something. Specifically targeting the Achilles? Maybe not, but he was up to something with his leg like that. Maybe attempting a charlie horse or something?
Career threatening?

I think the team medical staff diagnosed it clinically and he needs MRI for further characterization of the injury.
Either way (partial or complete), he'll probably need surgery...if he had popped it on his own it would be a different story.

Looking at the video (sorry for the ads before it...), it looks kind of deliberate. Like Cooke stomped on him:

About 50 seconds in after the ads.

Bad news, probably my favorite non flame player.
Love the way he plays the game.
Really hope this doesn't affect his incredible skating.

That was horrible to watch. I hope it's not too bad and he's able to recover quickly.

That definitely looked intentional. Something needs to be done about Cooke.

At first glace I thought your post was about Matt Cooke and I was really confused.
But no way that was intentional. Hopefully Karlsson recovers quickly, really great player to watch.

You really think that? It was a hockey play that went horribly wrong.

The questioning about it is fair given Matt Cooke's reputation, but I can't see this being remotely intentional. I don't think he was trying anything out of the ordinary here. I really don't.

I don't know if it was intentional, but on that play there is no reason for Cooke to get his foot that far off the ice.

It looks like Cooke moved his foot to an unnatural position and then made a downward motion.
I won't say definitely intentional, but suspicious looking at least.

The perfect Matt Cooke play looks just like a hockey play that went horribly wrong.

I second that it wasn't intentional. When you watch it in slow-mo, it does look like Cooke intended to do it, but if you watch enough games, you'll see that play pretty often when two guys are battling for the puck. Cooke looked like he was about to pin Karlsson to the boards, and he lifted his skate a little too high. Cooke's been an idiot in the past, but this time I don't think there was that intent. As dirty as he's been, not many players (even him) would want to do something that messy.

Terrible outcome, but it was a hockey play gone wrong. Any player other than Cooke and it isn't even being discussed as dirty.
On TSN during the 1st intermission of the Flames game they showed a few clips of the Flames/Stars game where the same kind of play happened, the player trying to pin the guy into the boards lifting his leg into the other player.

Yup, I didn't think it was dirty. Huge losses for Ottawa.
