Default "Blade Runner" Pistorius charged with murdering girlfriend

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...91D0AE20130214

Quote:
Johannesburg's Talk Radio 702 said Pistorius was believed to have shot his girlfriend, a model, in the head and arm, although the circumstances were unclear. The radio had said before the murder charge that he might have mistaken her for a burglar.
Quote:
South African Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius, known as the "Blade Runner" for his racing prosthetics, was charged on Thursday with murdering his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria.

Police said they had opened a murder case after a 30-year-old woman was found shot dead at the scene in the upmarket Silverlakes gated community on the outskirts of the capital.

While the "thought she was a burglar" reasoning sounds insane to us, it's unfortunately a reality in South Africa, and it happens quite regularly.

However this turns out, it's a very sad story.

It sounds as though there have been previous incidents at their home, and neighbors did mention disturbances earlier in the evening on this particular night.

Another article pointed out that the notion of an accidental shooting isn't come from police, but appears to be speculation from the South African media as to why a national hero would do this.

Apparently she was shot 4 times, so I doubt this was an accident.

Now I feel less guilty about my opinion that he shouldn't have been allowed to compete in the Olymics with those blades.

Well if he had a machine gun one bullet and four bullets is probably the difference between holding the trigger down for 0.4 seconds and 0.8 seconds. I don't think the four times points to anything one way or another.

Police said that earlier reports that Steenkamp may have been mistaken for a burglar by Pistorius did not come from the police. Several local media outlets had initially reported that the shooting may have been accidental.

I'm guessing this wasn't how she was hoping to be blown away on Valentine's Day.

9mm is a calibre, so it doesn't have any relevance on how many times he pulled the trigger.
There are lots of fully automatic 9mm guns out there.
