I would go with a pay and go type of phone. I know that Fido and Telus have that sort of argangement and you can just buy the phone cards at any 7-11 and it isn't hard to do at all. If you are just using it from time to time I would go with the Fido option as it is the cheapest to use due to the per second billing.

Edit: from what I hear Fido also expanded their network and is on more solid ground company wise now.

Fido merged with Rogers. The coverage is much better now.

You are right, awhile ago Rogers bought Fido. Now Fido users get the same coverage as Rogers. Before Fido was part of Rogers, I'd lose reception at Callaway park, now I get reception almost all the way through the mountains. I like fido per second billing is great.
From what i know of the pay as you go cards, you buy a certain number of minutes and they give you a certain time period which you have to use them in, after that they expire and you must buy more. I could be wrong.
Here is a link to Fido's prepaid service Fido Prepaid info

Virgin mobile has come to Canada now too. Might be worth checking out.

I bought a phone recently for the same reasons, didn't want a contract and wanted the option to cancel when I wanted to. Ended up going with Virgin Mobile... cheap phones (I think the nokia is on sale at Best Buy right now for 79.99) and the phone cards expire after 4 months (I think it's 30 or 60 days with the other pay as you go guys). They use the bell netowrk so coverage is fine.
