Default Water Hammer

Anybody have any luck fixing this. It's a loud bang in your pipes after you turn off a faucet or toilet. It usually happens at the furthest pipes away from the water source.

I've tried draining almost all the water from my pipes and it helps, but then comes back after a few toilet flushes. It only happens after the toilet refills and it's at the furthest part of the house.

It's not copper piping so not sure why I'm getting this. Could air be getting in the pipes?

Is putting in a water arrestor the only fix??

Any help is appreciatted.

I've heard that it sometimes can be the pipe is not properly secured and it is banging against either another pipe or something else.

Not sure if that's your problem but might be worth looking into?

I'm fighting this as well at the moment. It's not loose pipes and I've done the drain the water thing as well. I'm down to replacing parts in the toilet or ?

I didn't think toilets would do that.

It's usually plumbing to toilets, washing machines and dishwashers that do it.

In this case I don't think it's pipes banging against the wall because i can temporarily get rid of the noise.

Our washing machine does it.

The only thing that worked for me was one of these:

It seems to be wearing out now though, if that is possible. It's been years so maybe that's normal.

Yes, Waterhammers are pipes that are not properly secured. It's not air in the system otherwise you be getting that small explosion sound that happens when air in the line is vented.

How do you know it's not the copper pipe?

Because the noise goes away after draining all the water out of the pipes and refilling. If it were pipes banging I'm guessing it would continue maybe??

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is it returns after a few flushes as an air pocket in another part of the system is cushioning the abrupt stop in water?

Just so we are on the same page, have you ever seen the pipes banging or can you just hear it? What type of water lines are in your house, copper or PEX?

It's Pex. Haven't seen it. The noise comes from inside the wall. Not ruling out a loose pipe though.

That is a little odd. Waterhamers with PEX are rare but it does happen. PEX is usually secured to a stud or joist with ushaped brackets that have a nail on one side. If I had to hazard a guess I'd wager that one of those fasteners has broken free allowing the PEX to bang against some ductwork or something.

If you can locate the wall where the banging is loudest, I'd cut a small hole and do a visual.

That's usually the noise my junk makes when it hits the water after I unravel it to use a public urinal

Mine the noise is only in the basement in the utility room and I can see the piping and its not rattling. I also can stop it temp wise until I open the main water valve to like just over halfway . Anything above that it starts.
