It's official now:

“We are pleased to announce that we have signed Kimmo Timonen to a one-year contract extension,” Holmgren said. “Kimmo’s presence on the ice for us and in our locker room is invaluable. We look forward to him continuing his all-around play for us.”
Tim Panaccio @tpanotchCSN
Flyers officially re-sign Timonen for one year at $6 mill

that's insane money for Timonen. Remember that next year the cap is going down too... That's almost 10% of the cap on one old defensman.

Not a bad player for a 10th rounder.
1998-Jun-26 Traded from Los Angeles Kings with Jan Vopat to Nashville Predators for future considerations
I sure hope those futures LA traded to the Preds worked out!

He signed his current 6 million dollar deal when the cap was around 50 million.
His game hasn't changed a whole lot ince he signed that deal. He's one of those defenders who's sense and smarts is his best asset. He's played a lot of minutes, but he's played them very efficiently.

I take it you have no clue how good of a defencemen Timonen is.
He'd instantly become our best defencemen. 6 million is a good deal and he'd likely get more for a longer term in the free market.

Flyers also kind of desperately need to hang on to him. But yeah, market value for a great player.

Just watch Timonen for a full shift sometime. Even at the World Cup and Olympics among other elite players, he stands out as a heads-up, smooth, smart player. Plays like a mini Lidstrom. When it became apparent Nashville couldn't afford Timonen, I was really hoping Sutter would step up and bring him to Calgary.

Timonen is the only reason I want Philly to succeed if Flames do not. He's such a humble guy, classy.

He's not going to retire, because then he wouldn't get any money...but I don't think we will ever see him play again
