I personally think Sean Monahan is far too high. Nichushkin a bit too low and I have Barkov #3 behind Jones and MacKinnon.

Even though it doesn't fit the team's most pressing needs, I'd love to see them draft Drouin.

Gauthier is massive at 6'5''/210 and he's only 17? If he can skate at an NHL level, I don't see a lot of players in the league that can handle him 1 on 1. Potential to be the steal of the draft, would love to see Jankowski and him as our top 2 centers.

If the Flames get a 2nd rounder I would love to see them take a flyer on Petan. Not a big guy but he has scored at every level he has ever played in.

How did we lose our 2nd this year? Or are you referring to an additional 2nd?

Domi's making his way up there. Lazar's way down there.

If the Flames draft high this year, one of Drouin / MacKinnon would be the prime target (of course). If they draft where they usually do, in the 12-15th range, then Gauthier would be the most sound choice for the team, in a big point-scoring center that can physically outpower opposition on the ice.

If we get him to wear no. 3, I can dust off my old Denis Gauthier jersey too!

Mueller seems a bit high. He's a pretty stable guy, but doesn't have great upside. Maybe McKenzie is thinking he's a nice "safe pick"?
Other than that, there are a couple surprises...not as big as that though (in this draft, I had him pegged top 60, not late 1st). With a top 5 pick, I'd love the Flames to draft Barkov. Gauthier is a nice second option.

More reason not to trade this year's pick.
It is the best draft in a decade and full of big Cs and Ds.
The Flames cannot trade away their 1st this year.
And they should acquire more.

Unless you're surrendering Iginla, Kiprusoff, or Baertschi, I don't think a team will give you their first. And if it is, it'll probably be a late pick. Though late 1sts this year are pretty awesome as well.

Hate to rip on a valley kid but I think Lazar's even overrated there, trading on his reputation being such a high bantam draft pick a little... any other forward scoring at that kind of rate wouldn't be in the top 30.
Hope the Flames can get a 2nd rounder back somehow, it's not a bad draft.

Players that would get a 1st or a 1st +:
Iginla
Kiprusoff
Cammalleri
Bouwmeester
Giordano
Glencross
Tanguay
Stempniak gets you a 2nd
Hell, Butler probably gets you a 2nd at the deadline

I really wonder who the Flames were targeting when they were thinking of trading their first last year. I remember Feaster talking about looking at trading the first last year, but then supposedly after Weisbrod watched Jankowski, he told Feaster not to trade their 1st.
Some big upcoming free agents might get traded this deadline - I wonder if Feaster would think of packaging a 1st and 'gamble' on one of them thinking he has a good chance at signing someone. For instance, I would assume a 1st would be part of a package in getting Getzlaf.
Anaheim is sitting pretty this year. Though I am sure they do not want to be going through another rebuild, this year would be a great one to do just that. Getzlaf, Perry and even Bobby Ryan would command a first round pick each in different packages.
Conversely, the Flames themselves if out of the playoff picture by the trade deadline could potentially find themselves with a couple of extra 1sts (Iginla, Kipper, possibly Bouw if he keeps playing well). With Hartley's more offensive system, it SHOULD translate into better offensive numbers for the Flames, and thus should increase the relative value for a number of them on trade deadline day. If the Flames stumble this year, it would seem a good year to do so. I think the Flames make the playoffs personally, but fun to play the 'what if' scenario. Best year to do a 'traditional rebuild' anyways. I still think the Oilers were 'unlucky' to have tanked when they did. Though their young players are good, and though it is still a bit early to judge them, it seems to me they rebuilt during a bit of a lull in the draft quality.
Columbus might just be a force 3-4 years from now.

Sellers at the deadline always get a huge payday. I'm sure they could have gotten a late first and an average prospect for Jokinen last year too. If I had to guess I'd say the Flames will be outside the playoff picture but too close to tear it down again though.... we're kind of stuck in limbo the last few years.
