Default Things to do in Atlanta GA

Heading down there the week of February 4 - 8 for a conference and need some ideas on things to do/see. I'll be staying in the Buckhead area which is just north of downtown and need some input of that area if anyone is familar with it.

Thanks

Catch a Thrashers game for sure! uh, oops nevermind!

Seriously though, I've never been but I'd go catch a Hawks game.

I've heard golf is nice and cheap down there too

The Varsity is the classic drive-in place for hot dogs and assorted unhealtyness, and The Vortex is famous for burgers and beer. There's also a Fogo de Chao near Buckhead that's definitely worth eating at if you're in the mood to gorge yourself on meat, though it's much more reasonably priced for lunch.

I haven't actually done the Coca-Cola tour, but everyone says good things, and the aquarium is a must.

I'm also a fan of the fried chicken at The Cheetah. It's overpriced, but you'll never have a meal with a better view (it's a high end strip club), and they'll send a limo to bring you there for free. Magic City is intimidating for white guys, but I think it's worth visiting at least once so that you can experience what it's like to be in the middle of a rap video. Surprisingly, Mondays are the best/craziest nights there.

Went there a couple years ago for a Thrashers game.

Now that they are gone there are literally 2 things to do.

1) Go to the Coke museum, it's kind of cool I guess. Make sure you drink the "Beverly" drink in the tasting room

2) Go to the aquarium. It's amazing. If you get the chance I highly recommend doing the swimming with the whale sharks. That was one of the coolest things I've ever done.

Seconded the Aquarium, take your camera and know the indoor settings well.

I also recommend Gladys Knight's restaurant - for chicken and waffles - not too far from the Aquarium and Cocacola museum.

For those of us who never plan on going to Atlanta, can you explain what a Beverly drink is?

I don't know what it is about Atlanta, but it does have the most beautiful black women in North America.

I already mentioned Magic City, but Onyx, Kamal's 21 and Shakers are other world class black strip clubs in town. Hit a Waffle House near any of those clubs at closing time and you'll have an excellent chance of picking someone up.

Downtown Atlanta is gorgeous, but don't go wandering off the beaten path. The safe and unsafe parts of Atlanta are not separated by much geographically.

I have never been there myself, however you will be in Atlanta during the same week that the local NFL team is playing in the Super Bowl (my opinion). I think that Sunday will be awesome fun, whereever you want to catch the game.

I roll into Atlanta the day after the superbowl. It would be awesome to be there if the Falcons were playing in it for sure.

Gargamel - You must really enjoy the Strip Clubs as I've never seen someone have such an indept critique. Especially ones in the dirty south when this is a calgary forum. I think I'll avoid the Strip Clubs on this trip and just stick to some good pubs that people mention. I would hate to be the lonely dude going to the Strippers by himself. Especially a white lonely dude in Atlanta.

So far all I'm hearing is Coke museum and Aquarium which I knew already. Does anyone have something original or different to do in Atlanta that doesn't involve fried chicken at a strip joint??

For the record, The Varsity, The Vortex and Fogo de Chao are not strip clubs. The Vortex in particular would be a good place to hit since they have solid burgers and a good beer selection.

But, yes, I do enjoy strippers, and Atlanta is famous for them. Even if you're not trying to pick them up, though, you can't go wrong with a late night visit to a Waffle House if you've had a lot to drink.

People will recommend The Underground mall for shopping. Its really underwhelming.

Do enjoy eating Southern food, though. Eating truly good grits is awesome!

Anthony Bourdain will be doing an episode of The Layover about Atlanta next Monday, so you should check that out for some more ideas. Tht show is always good for some very worthwhile restaurants and unique things to see, though I've read that even he will be visiting a strip club. I'm telling you, scoopdogg, it's the thing to do in Atlanta.

Edit: Just saw the episode. It's excellent. Lots of bars and restaurants worth checking out when you're in Atlanta.

Atlanta is one of the worst places I've ever visited. Had to go there on a business trip once in 2008. Favorite place was the airport departure gate!
