Federal Court grants rights to Métis, non-status Indians
http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/stor...challenge.html
I thought this was somewhat interesting as my family has Metis heritage. My brother and I never bothered to get our cards due to the lack of real benefit. Now we'll certainly be applying. I'm sure there's more then a few of us out there

I posted that in the Idle thread. I aslo asked what the benefits of having status were.
Can you tell me (serious question)?

Ahhh I thought of looking there, but didn't figure it would be there

This seems to answer a few questions. I don't know all the exact details myself at the moment, as I'm still learning myself. All I know is I got an email from my folks pushing for my brother and I to apply soon.

I'm confused.
Why would you be applying for a status card when this ruling (essentially) extends status benefits to non-status indians?

Because you still have to be recognized as belonging to receive the benefits? I could have gotten my Metis card before, as I assume anyone who belonged to a non status tribe could have. Those cards at the time didn't allow you any federal benefits. With this ruling, anyone who has a Metis or non status card should now receive the same benefits as a status indian

Oh, okay. That's why I was confused. I didn't realize there was such a thing as a "non-status card".

In Canada, a Non-Status Indian is a legal term referring to any First Nations individual who for whatever reason is not registered with the Federal government, and/or is not registered to a band which signed a Treaty with the Crown.
For several decades, Canadian First Nations women automatically became non-status if they married non-First Nations men.
Prior to 1955, a status Indian may lose their status and become non-status through enfranchisement (voluntarily giving up status, usually for a minimal cash payment), by obtaining a college degree or becoming an ordained minister.

What's the lineage requirements for Metis? 1/32 or something? I'm being serious. I have a friend who has a métis card who has blonde hair and blue eyes.

Eye Glasses (Every couple of years)
Limited Medical and Dental coverage (Don't know the details)
Cheap Cigarettes Roughly 50% less (Purchased on a reserve)
Roughly 8% discount on Gas (Purchased on reserve)
No GST on items purchased on reserves. (There might be some restrictions I'm not aware of)
That's all I know of but really haven't explored it too much.

I have blonde hair and blue eyes as well. Huron Wendat. I think 1/32 is too watered down. I'd believe it is 1/16th. I'm trying to figure out what I am. LOL!

I am and will not be applying.
I cant get them to pay for my school in the 80's
I have benefits at work
I have no children to think of
I do not live on a reserve nor do I collect a cheque on a reserve I have no real benefit from this.
I also wont be the guy who looks his nose down at the Indian's handouts and then put my hand out when it is good for me.
I am an educated Canadian who makes a nice living and I will contribute to this country not take from it when I can.

It is definitely worth it. If you buy a $30K car, you'll save $1500 as long as the papers are signed on the reservation, and that is AB. In BC you are talking $3600. If I had the benefit, I would milk it for that alone considering I drop 40k every couple years on cars/motorcycles.

Was this the same judge who found no evidence of financial mismanagement of chief spence's records and declared the third party administrator illegal?

I'm all for the free education if it means people are bettering themselves.
I am choked about opening up the flood gates to even more people to have free reign on pillaging fish and wildlife.

Not to sure about the wildlife but while I don't need to buy a Fishing License I do need to follow the regulations. (In Alberta at least)
