Default Audubon Christmas Bird Count

Anyone else taking part in the Christmas Bird Count this year? It's scheduled for Dec 27 in my area. It'll be my 3 year participating but I can't seem to find my results from year 1. Here are my results from last year. It's meant to show the most of any one species present at one time in my yard.

Red breasted nuthatch - 1
Ring necked pheasant - 2
Crow - 6
Blue jays - 6
American Goldfinch - 7
Black capped chickadee - 11
Dark eyed junco - 14
Mourning dove - 20

How come? I don't really know much about birding or anything, so I'm just curious as to why?

I know some people who are fairly avid and wouldn't mind trying this for a day though. It seems like something that would be really relaxing and calm.

Movie reference.

I'm an avid wildlife watcher. Would absolutely enjoy this exercise!

I used to do this every year when I was in Calgary, basically take a section of the city and record what was seen coupled with the backyard count. It always finished up with a pot luck and beer at Gus Yaki's house.
I say that because if there ever was a list of interesting Calgarians that people should meet I'd like to nominate Gus to the list. Mr Natural Historian of Calgary in many aspects, birds, plants, vertebrates, invertebrates ..... a great teacher, full of humility and just an all-round nice guy.

Anyways looks like Calgary's results are in for 2012.

Is this just a fad ( sort of like poker was during the last lockout)?

This will be the 113th count. So I would say it's not a fad.

I'm always keeping an eye around the yard and trying to identify any new birds that show up. Last weekend I had a Northern Shrike stop in. It's the first time I've ever seen one. http://museum.gov.ns.ca/mnh/nature/nsbirds/bns0299.htm

I think the count is going to be down for me this year but I'm putting out a few extra goodies to entice them to stop in and be counted.

Yeah, looks like Calgary already did their count. For those interested in taking part next year you can find the contact info for the coordinator in your area at: http://netapp.audubon.org/cbc/public/Search.aspx and I'm sure they could put you on the email list.

Living on the ridge to the south side of Fish Creek I often see some really pretty songbirds that are not found deeper in the city, but I never know what any of them are called. But there's a lot more variety than the usual sparrows and wrens and crows and gulls. Red ones, and yellow ones, and even one that looked like a blue jay, but I was fairly certain they didn't live in these parts?

I saw an owl about 2 weeks ago, that was cool, don't see them too often.
