Do you mean ghost as in a manifestation of a human spirit or ghost as in your brain took in surrounding normal stimuli and then processed it in a way which did not agree with convention? No to the first definition, yes to the second.

Some lady came to my mom's house shortly after my dad died, claiming that she saw his ghost at his funeral. This is apparently something that was really common for her to do.
A few years later, I was having dinner with my wife, her dad and his new wife, and I told this story in response to a similar question. His wife started beaking off to me, saying I had no right to mock people for things I obviously didn't understand etc, so I just decided to keep the peace and not say anything else.
Turns out, I found out after dinner, that lady was her.

My sister, who's a skeptic, atheist and also someone convinced she saw a ghost when she was young.
We've had interesting discussions about it, I think like all ghost sightings its the mind playing tricks, but she is quite convinced of it.
You never hear of ghost sightings in a brightly lit room, its always in shadows, darkness, haze, any ideal situation for the brain to put shapes and faces to the unknown which is something left over from evolution protecting us from predators.

After my mom died and I moved away. I came back a couple of years later and was talking to one of my friends from down the block. She told me she made friends with the new people that lived in my old house (the house where she died) and then my friend told me that they would see my mother's ghost there and tried doing Ouija boars crap with it.
I was really offended that she would even say such a thing. It was a totally idiotic thing to say to someone.

How does making the unknown resemble the safety of your own species confer any kind of survival advantage at all?
In those times the shapes would have been more likely of animals, tigers, etc.. Other humans would also been seen as threats, tribal times was a very violent era.
This is a well known affect studied by science.

Heard footsteps in the night when I was only half asleep -- door to the master bedroom was open. Sounded like my son running to the washroom in the hall. Went to check on him and he was sound asleep in his bedroom. Definitely not the house creaking or settling.
Couple of nights later, wife heard same thing. Creeped her out.
