Default Wildrose AGM this weekend - for political nerds

So it's our big AGM this weekend. I'm going to try and live blog from it for any political nerds that might be interested.

http://janemorgan.blogspot.ca/2012/1...e-journal.html

Not sure how many friends I will have at this AGM; I've been pretty critical of the Party - here and here.

My agenda for this thread is to send other posters into a tizzy that I've started another political thread and haven't come out and stated my agenda.

I'm on #teamrob and hope he takes over as leader sooner rather than later!

Who decided on Grey Cup weekend?

Good luck getting any (positive) press coverage.

Have you read their statement?
They just took a bunch of things that happened and claimed that they orchestrated them.

I will be unable to make it to the AGM this year and am not standing for reelection but hopefully it all goes well.

On that note, as of Sunday morning CP will officially be without a member on the board of the Wildrose Party. (That I know of that is, it is always possible that another member is lurking here.)

Came in for a 'Lake of Fire' reference. Looked at the thread tags, left satisfied. Thanks FL!

Maybe that's the point. Keep it low key, avoid media spotlight.

I was thinking about this today (as a result of Rerun bringing up Wildrose in the context of polls being inaccurate), and this thread seems like as good a place as any.

Jane, I know you like to argue that Wildrose isn't a party of nutjobs. Your argument is (and correct me if I'm wrong) that the policies aren't nutty (we disagree on whether "conscience rights" is nutty) and therefore the party isn't nutty. But here's the thing I was thinking about: in some ways, when you are perceived as extreme-right, reality will follow perception. If people believe you are socially regressive, you will attract socially regressive people. And then those supporters will affect your policies (or at least your image), and further alienate the mainstream. It's a tricky thing to deal with... can you turn people away? Can you clearly position yourselves so that you don't attract the crazies? Can you afford to do that? Can you afford not to?

I think every party can draw crazies. Neither the left nor right (or centre) can claim to be nut-free. Unless your overall party numbers are extremely, and I mean EXTREMELY low; then crazy policies may slip through.

As for the conscience rights it's a redundant policy. Doctors already have it in their Standards of Practice. So I don't think the party needs to duplicate that and I certainly won't be calling the College of Physicians and Surgeons nutty.

I was previously a Wildrose supporter, mostly because I was not satisfied with the policies and actions of the other parties; however, upon Wildrose finding out I supported them and obtaining my phone number, I was subsequently bombarded over a long period of time with calls looking for handouts. It was a nuisance. A call or two would not have bothered me, but it was as if I owed them money and they sent it to a third party for collection.

With that experience, I decided to no longer support Wildrose. I know this is not on topic, but since there may be individuals here who can affect change, I wanted to share my experience as it may assist them in improving their tactics.

I think that the nuts tend to be on the outsides of the political spectrum though. A party that is the furthest viable party on either side of centre will attract a lot more nuts than one in the centre. So things are a bit different for a centrist party than one on the side.

(Being a centrist comes with it's own set of problems though, especially in first-past-the-post.)

Last year, they called me about a week before Christmas asking for a donation. We just had a baby, and I wasn't going to give anything to anyone outside of my family, so I politely declined. He responded by asking for "a more modest donation of $200". WTF? Really? I don't even want to know what he thought I was going to give to begin with.

This is a common concern and I know many members and CA's will be pressuring the new Executive Committee to address this and take a different approach.
