Fort McMurray Jobs (Work Camps)
I was curious to know if there are any publications on the net, which list how to go about getting employment in Ft McMurray, and the various work camps that provide accommodation for workers. I have an oilfield directory, and can access the RM Wood Buffalo site for more information.
However, I am wanting to know advice to get on with a company that treats it's workers fairly. I'm not looking to work on a drilling/service rig. I have over three years experience in the field, mainly surveying, and line locating, with some environmental cleanup.
I have all my tickets, and possess a Health and Safety Certificate after completing a 10 month course. If any of you can recommend some good occupations, especially in relation to environmental health/safety, I would greatly appreciate it.

The best way in is to use headhunters.... Start looking at the job boards, contacting companies such as addecco, Qed, fircroft, swift etc...

I would check all the owner company websites for job postings and try to get on with them. You'll get the best rooms in camp, best shifts, and the best compensation.
Edit: This only applies to HSE work.

Try the websites of the following:
Can-Am Geomatics, Foresite Geomatics, Ganotec, HCS Focus, McElhanney Land Surveys, MDH Engineered Soultions, Summit Surveys, Wood Buffalo Industrial Surveyors.
There are job fairs for oilsands related jobs seemingly every couple weeks in Edmonton / Leduc. The Edmonton Journal online in the business and / or classfieds section should give you a pretty good feel for what's out there and whose looking.

If you are looking for work surveying send me a PM and I can put you in touch with someone hiring for shift work in FM. They usually travel up for three week shifts and then a week off back home although every site has a different schedule.

Thanks.
I'm on the MEG Energy site near Conklin, AB. It's a pretty sweet gig, and they apparently are going to be doing a lot of hiring after Christmas. If you are young, not in a serious relationship, and with no children, I would highly recommend some of these camp projects.

I survey in Grande Prairie and our field crews come home at night at least 75% of the time. Right now I think we have one crew staying in a hotel.
On a side note, if you like working outside I would definitely recommend you consider land surveying. The work is interesting, you get to see areas of the province that almost no one has seen before, you use ATV's, snowmobiles and helicopters to get to work, and as a party chief you make some pretty decent coin. Granted most of the cool work is on the western side of the province.

I saw this today:
http://www.calgarysun.com/2012/11/16...velop-oilsands
Quote:
The province is on the march to attract thousands of demobilized U.S. military personnel to help develop what’s been touted as Canada’s economic engine for coming decades — the oilsands.
Its success would also act as a goodwill gesture for Canada’s controversial oilsands, said Alberta Energy Minister Ken Hughes.
The mission has attracted the attention of U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Jacobson and the encouragement of that country’s former consul general in Calgary, Laura Lochman, said Hughes.
“We’re trying to understand how we could produce employment opportunities for American service people returning from overseas,” Hughes said Friday.
“I’ve detected some interest in the States.”
Hughes said there are a half-million unemployed or underemployed younger military veterans in the U.S. — a force that could be tapped to satisfy a chronically-hungry energy industry in Alberta.

Interesting idea. I know lots of guys that I was in with went into the patch. They said it was a lot like being in, but no uniform or weapons.

Land surveying, right? Cory does seismic surveying. I don't fully grasp the nuanced differences.

The accommodations at that site for corporate staff are unreal.
Steak and Lobster for dinner? Awesome.

If you really care I can direct you to the relevant Act that defines the legal difference between Surveying and Land Surveying.
It is quite the read.
