islamic extremism will only increase in the coming years, because the reasons for it are getting more productive.
saudi arabia is the classic example of a country that does all it can to foster hatred, and is given a pass by the united states. this is counterproductive.
the zionist movement of the late 19th century quite clearly stated its intentions for a jewish-only palestine. any hope of peaceful settlement ended there, 'let us move here and we shall live together' - good luck. anti-semitism has set the arab world backwards in ways that permeate their entire society.
slanted but well-researched anti-semitism essay:

anti-semitism is WAY counterproductive.
what's interesting to me is that the postwar wave of secular arab nationalism, or ba-athism, from the 50s, was virulently anti-semitic, where religious leaders in the arab world at the time were the doves.
meaning, the countries that tried seriously to modernize, like syria, iraq, and egypt, taught anti-semitism in schools, syria to this day.
translation: the very mechanisms of modernization actually keep people in the dark. ba'athism, wahabism, though entirely different, share one serious and ugly black mark: both were invented by foreign interests. ba'athism is ataturk-style modern turkish ideas - xenophobic but generally for westernization, and wahabism was a british-founded anti-ottoman resistance movement.
these days however it seems religious-based anti-semitism is the driving force behind hatred of foreigners in the arab and muslim world, and hey, the west just keeps invading countries.
no wait, we can fix this whole region if we only invade one more country!
maybe just airstrikes...
indonesia is a place to watch, especially because so much of its oil wealth is owned by foreign interests.
