I tried doing an owl this year. I haven't been able to get a really good photo of it.

1) How do you guys do such a good job carving?
2) How do you get the pumpkin not to look/smell like crap after a day or two... I'm assuming you've carved these already, but the kids won't be around for a few days!

1)
Just the little plastic saw is all that's needed. Bought a little 3 piece set at London drugs years ago for under 10 bucks.
2) You can carve upto a week in advance and keep outside as long as it stays cool/cold. If it start to dry out and shrivel just soak it in the sink and it will plump back up.

the tools Zevo mentioned are a huge plus - we bought a similar set a few years ago and they work pretty good
also - have you ever googled 'pumpkin patterns' or something like that? there are lots of free patterns out there - just print them off, tape them to the pumpkin and carve away!
this is one that i used....

Here is how I spent a few hours yesterday. I think it's OK, not real happy how the trench and circle turned out. At least my son is happy.

We use the patterns on Zombie Pumpkin. You have to pay a small donation but they have so many patterns. http://www.zombiepumpkins.com

Congrats. you built a death star that even Luke can't blow up!'
hmmm i've always wondered why, when they rebuilt the death star it was even easier to destroy than the first one. You would think they would make the core impenetrable to a whole flipping spaceship flying into it.
