Default 2012 Christmas: Adopt a Family/Christmas Hampers

Looking to start making this an annual thing - anyone have experience with a good local charity for Adopting a Family for Christmas (ie - buying gifts/food for a family in need at Christmas)?

I'd like to avoid just writing a cheque and being able to go shopping for a family in need if possible.

The last company I worked for always participated in the Calgary Sun's Adopt A Family program

Thanks. That's a bit on the pricey side for a single guy's salary.

I'll keep looking around.

A few years, in my early 20's, we would do a Secret Santa type thing for some families we knew that were having a hard time. I seem to recall it being like a 12 Days of Christmas type thing. Like, the first day would be 1 box of oranges, second day would be 2 bags of cookies, 3rd day is 3 mugs with cocoa, etc tailored to the family.

We would drop off stuff on their door step, ring the doorbell and run for the bushes or the car around the corner.

Almost all the things we did were either homemade or fairly cheap. One year I won a raffle at work and got a decent toaster oven, so we dropped it off for them on the last day. It was really cool to go by a year or so later for dinner and seeing that sitting on their counter.

My office did the adopt-a-family thing last year. It felt really good to help out.

I'm happy to have seen this thread. I want to propose to my in-laws that we do something like this instead of drawing names and everyone getting a crappy present yet again.
