Women in Combat
Thoughts?
Should they be in front line units?
I am of the opinion they shouldn't be, but I am old.

SECRET Defence documents have revealed an extraordinary litany of reasons why it fears letting women fight in frontline combat roles - including increased sexual harassment, litigation, deaths and battlefield pregnancies.
The concerns include "almost certain" personal privacy problems while working with men, males trying to protect females in war zones and women being considered not "credible" in combat

The women of the Canadian Forces played a much bigger combat role in Afghanistan than they did in earlier overseas missions, according to a research paper to be presented this week.
The study found 310 Canadian women were deployed to Afghanistan in combat positions such as infantry in 2001-11, more than triple the number that had frontline fighting roles in the 1990s.

I have never been in combat, or around the the military to truly understand the training; however, on the surface I am supportive of women being in combat.

The closest thing I know to a soldier is a firefighter and he is very far from shy when admitting they *hate* when they have to work with a woman. It's a boys club in the purest form. I would imagine soldiers are much the same, but that's purely a guess.
I just finished watching Starship Troopers on Netflix. I don't know... seemed to work out pretty well for Johnny Rico and the boys.

I'm ok with it if the woman can pull her weight and do the job as good as the men. I'm not ok with it just for optics and some sort of quota. That goes for RCMP and firefighters as well.
Unfortunately I think there is a lot of the latter going on.

I'm old too but I'm ok with it as long as its not front line infantry units or any other position where the job requires physical strength.

You ever load rounds into a tank or unload rounds for an artillery position?

No. I assume by your question that it requires a lot of physical strength?
If the answer is yes, let me change my original statement to:
I'm old too but I'm ok with it as long as its not front line infantry units or any other position where the job requires physical strength.
With that clarification I don't see a problem with a woman being a tank driver or the person who adjusts the range (whatever that person is called) on an artillery piece.

If they are able to physically do the job? No problem. If they are unable to physically do the job or need to have the job requirements altered so that they can do them? Problem. But I'd feel that way regardless of gender. If there's a man out there who can't physically do the job, he shouldn't be there either. If you can do the job as required, I don't really care what 'bits' you have.

I was in an infantry reserve unit that had a couple of women. The prevailing thought was always as long as you can carry the pack and keep up and do your job, there's really no problem.
That said, being deployed 6 months you may run into issues.

I know a couple female infantry soldiers. Neither of them did tours. Not sure if it was because of their gender, or for other reasons.

I feel the best people should be placed in whatever situation requires them. If the 10 best end up on the front lines and 1 of them is a woman, I don't understand how that could be a problem. To say they'd be a distraction sexually makes about as much sense to me as covering a woman's face to avoid temptation. I can't speak for anybody else here, but I've worked with women before and never ran into the problem of impregnating a single one.
