Default Your Charity of Choice?

I'm sure the majority of the CP folks have charities they choose to donate to. Who do you donate to and why?

If you don't donate to charities, no problem. Why not?

I know KevanGuy runs a call centre that works with non-profits and some CPers have worked with him. Hopefully I'm not stepping on his toes.

I work for a local non-profit and it's always interesting to see the motivation behind individuals charity choices.

Canadian Cancer society is my choice of charity.

Why? Lost my father to Colon cancer in 2000.

The Stuttering Foundation.

I had a stutter as a child, I appreciate all that my Speech Therapists did to help me. I had the added stress of moving to different schools frequently as well, which only multiplied the issue.

I wasn't "cured" (though you never totally get rid of a stutter) until I recieved 3 months of intensive therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center while in the Marine Corps. It really did change my life.

http://www.stutteringhelp.org/

I also donate time and money to The Human Fund.

I also donate my free time with the Special Olympics program - volunteering as a coach in their baseball program during the summer months.

Before coming up to Edmonton for School, I was a Beaver leader with one of the local scout groups for a few years.

Heart & Stroke Foundation.

My wife (then fiancee) had a severe stroke a couple years ago due to the dissection of an artery in her brain which caused the inner lining to come loose which allowed blood to flow in between the layers and balloon closed to stop the flow.

Shriners Hospitals. I've seen first-hand the care the Shriners give to kids that are in their hospitals.
And Canadian Blood Services -I donate every 56 days.

My wife likes Stars, and I've been thinking about Engineers without Borders recently.

Heart and Stroke Foundation and the MS Society. Father passed away from a heart attack or blood clot (they never did a proper autopsy) and my mom and one of her sisters both have MS.

Canadian Cancer Society has been for a while, and its more important now, I have a family member thats been hit with it, and while the Alberta Health System has f'd things up, the CCS is an important charity.

In no particular order, the Salvation Army, Heart & Stroke, any kids, handicapped or women's shelter charity, the Tema Conter Memorial Foundation, Global Medic, the Paramedic Association of Canada's Benevolent Fund, and the John Petropoulos Memorial Fund. As for volunteering, I am the president of our local community association.

I generally prefer to support charities that have an intimate connection to my life or community. The exception to this is the Heart & Stroke Foundation. I absolutely will not give a donation to any charity that uses telemarketers to raise funds, and door knockers will only meet with a 50% chance of success ... it depends if their charity fits my kids, handicapped, women's shelter or local charity criteria.
