Default Is it a hate crime?

http://www.torontosun.com/2012/10/02...side-bc-mosque

Quote:
Mounties are investigating as a hate crime the piles of bacon and ham thrown at and scattered on the doorsteps of a Port Coquitlam mosque last week.
Coquitlam RCMP and B.C.’s hate crime team are on the case, especially since it’s the second time in about 18 months the mosque has been targeted.

In March 2011, racial slurs were sprayed on the side of the Islamic Society of B.C. building.
Let's set aside the disgust of wasting pork.

I can't decide if it is a hate crime. I am leaning to yes.

It's a sad world when I have to admit that my first thought was "wow, 18 months - that isn't as bad as I would have thought."

With the shortage of Bacon, this is a hate crime towards bacon lovers.

Do you hate the Oilers?

If yes, then hate isn't a crime.

If no, you're doing it all wrong, but hate still isn't a crime so join us in our hatred.

I'd say yes, although not as explicit as a lot of things it's clearly targeting their religious beliefs.

I think we need to talk to the perpetrators to determine their intent in order to put their act into context - could just be a dumb prank.

Yes, I suppose it has to be considered a hate crime. It's not like burning a cross in the front yard bad but still.

I have to admit though that I did laugh at this part:
Quote:

Society president Saad Bahr said the most recent incident came after as many as 50 people, among them families with children, left the building after finishing evening prayers but suddenly returned screaming.
Really? You ran away screaming from bacon?

As religions become more radical, the rebels on the other side become more...extreme.

When you start to physically deface the places of worship of an identifiable group like this, a line has been crossed.

Please expand, what context would put this in the "dumb prank" catagory?

It's more of a hate crime than printing a picture of the Prophet Mohammed.

less messy than throwing eggs. If they'd done both there would've been a nice breakfast.

I just picture a few 15-year-old kids cooking up this silly prank and having some yucks about it. Charging them with a hate crime would be totally overboard.

If it was some a-hole racists that are trying to "send a message" to the congregation (or whatever it's called), then hate crime those mo-foes.

Oh yes, a hate crime! As opposed to those other pesky love crimes that are committed all across the country every day.

But in 5 years the top group becomes the bottom group of your post. I would wager that most "a-hole racists" hold those beliefs from the 15 yr old age range.

It appears they know Muslim's thoughts on pork otherwise why not just TP the place. A good old fashion TPing seems more in line with the silly pank thought.

I am sure you really know the difference, and that post was to be cool.

A TPing would have been a better move for sure.
