Tax return software
Just wondering what others use for their tax returns. I've used Turbo Tax before and found it to be pretty efficient. I used Studio Tax last year and it seemed to work pretty well for a free program. I've also seen H&R Block programs, UFile, etc..........
Which one do you use and why?

I've used turbo tax forever and it seems to be very efficient especially for straight forward returns. It depends on how complex your return is going to be.
I never will trust anything with the HR Block label on it.

Studio Tax is free. I'm cheap and have an easy return, so that's what I use.

My wife just does ours by hand. They're pretty simple returns though. She literally completes them the same day we receive our last T4. I've already dropped ours off at the CRA office down town.

Agree. On both counts.
Turbo Tax is also free with straight forward returns and can handle more detailed returns at very reasonable rate.

One thing that I really like about Turbo Tax is it integrates with my quicken software, so if I've been diligent with my accounting, I can basically do a one button tax return in about 2 minutes.

I have used studio tax for the past few years and it seems to handle everythign I need it to. My return is going to be a bit more complex this year, with some small business income, and it appears that it will handle it without much problem.

Studiotax. It's free (although I donate a few bucks each year)
Been using it for years.
For the first few years I double-checked its numbers on my parents purchased QuickTax. It was never wrong.
Now I don't bother double-checking it at all.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards Studio Tax again this year, mainly because our returns are so easy and straight forward. I think if they were more complex I'd go back to something like Turbo Tax or another program that guaranteed it's accuracy.

My face is a bum!

TurboTax told me I owe $7500 this year, so I threw my laptop out the window. Anyone have $8500 I can borrow?

Last year they sent me a coupon and did my taxes for $50 or so? This year I called in and they want $350+ for some reason. Anyone know where to get those great coupons that they mail out. Basically the same return as last year and can't justify paying $300 more for a quick second look and minimal advice even if it is a write off. May just have to do my own on Studio tax also but don't mind chit chatting at the local H&R

I've always done my own returns (even when they started to get complicated); generally I've found H & R charges terribly high rates (ie: friend/single mom paid over $300.00 last year). Also their staff tend to be trained just weeks before tax season (since its seasonal) and not well versed on tax. For example; I know of cases where they missed basic deductions like premiums paid by employees into health service plans.

You can buy Turbotax for about $30.00.
Go halfer's with someone else since you can install it on 2 computers.
Let a couple friends do their returns on your computer and charge them $5 each.
$30.00 divided by 2 = $15.00 - $10.00 = $5.00 for your return.

If you buy turbo tax, you can get airmiles if you download it through Airmiles shops, plus you get 15% off.
It isn't huge, but it works towards getting an extra retailer towards yearly gold status.

Assuming that you want to use Studiotax, I like Turbotax so the $5 is fine with me.

Yes, Studiotax is fully certified by the CRA and works for Netfile.

I use UFile. I miss the days of working at a CA firm and using TaxPrep, but this is pretty good. I have employment, consulting, rental and investment income and all forms are accessible.
