Default WEEK 13: STAMPEDERS at Riders

WEEK 13: CALGARY STAMPEDERS vs Saskatchewan Riders
2pm MDT at Mosaic Stadium

Calgary played Saskatchewan twice in this season and won both games. The first game was on Week 4 when they played the Riders at home and won 41-38. Their 2nd game against each other Calgary came back late in the 4th quarter to beat the Riders 17-10 at Mosaic. That was the game after Calgary blew their lead late in the game against the Montreal Alouettes.

Calgary is now 7-4 and won the last 4 games. They are 2nd in the Western Conference behind the BC Lions. Saskatchewan is 5-6 in the season and they have been playing inconsistently in the past few games.

OFFENSE:

Riders coach Cory Chamblin challenged his defense and told them if Jon Cornish (who rushed for 158 yards the last game these two teams played) rush for over 100 yards, someone will lose their job on defense. Last game vs Winnipeg, Cornish only rushed for 53 yards with 2 TDs, his lowest rushing total since after the BC Lions' game. One of the reason for the low total was Hufnagel rested Cornish in the 2nd half because they are well ahead of the game. LaMarcus Coker with 5 carries for 79 rushing yards replaced Cornish on the backfield in the 2nd half. Coker had a 52-yards for a TD in the 4th quarter vs Winnipeg.

R Nik Lewis caught his 700th reception in his career the same time as he surpassed 10,000 receiving yards. Lewis just needs 3 catches to surpass former Hamilton Tiger Cats' receiver Rocky DiPietro for #10 on the CFL's all-time receptions list.

R Romby Bryant missed the last game and was replaced by rookie Maurice Price who had a good game against Winnipeg. Bryant will be back on Sunday.

Last game against the Bombers was the first time the Stamps rang up more than 500 yards of total offense in a game since Week 16 last season.

DEFENSE:

Calgary surrendered an average if 17.1 points per game over the past 6 games, 2nd best mark in the league behind only BC Lion's 15.7 pts per game.

Calgary haven't given up a first quarter TD since Week 4.

DE Charleston Hughes had his 6 QB sack this season. He is 2nd in the CFL in QB sack.

It looks like DL Kenny Pettway will be back in the lineup on Sunday but there's still no word if Stevie Baggs will play or not. Donovan Robinson who played on Pettway spot last week played well.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

LaMarcus Coker will be the starting returner again on Sunday. R Marquay McDaniel been backing him up as a returner. There is no word if returner Jason Armstead will be in the lineup yet or not.

Rene Paredes is 20 on 22 attempts on this year. He is 2nd best in accuracy rate in the CFL.

Special team's coverage have been playing really well so far this season.

GO STAMPS GO!!!

That Chamblin bet is pretty awesome. I hope Cornish hits 100 yard in the first half. haha

"I will put the guarantee in the paper and say that Jon Cornish better not get over 100 yards rushing,'' Chamblin declared on Wednesday. "If he does, somebody won't be on that field come the next week. I'm going to tell you that right now.

"We're going to make a conscious effort to stop the run. If he's going to run the ball, he'd better be running through six tacklers (who are) on his back. There shouldn't be open gaps.''

"I guarantee that he won't (rush for 100 yards) and, if he does, then somebody's going to have to pay for it - so it's a double guarantee.
"The players had better make sure, because they don't know who's not going to be here. Somebody won't be here if that guy gets 100-plus yards. I may be lenient with 101, but nowhere close to 150

Been waiting all week for someone to post that here..

It's not totally outrageous. Cornish is averaging ~80 yards a game or something like that. Certainly not an impossible task. I don't like making it public though. Rather just see that happen in the dressing room. Maybe Chamblin knows what it takes to fuel his players.

My worry is that they will be so focused on Cornish, succeed in stopping him, only to have Lewis catch pass after pass over the middle.

Actually, yes it kind of is.

I understand why he would say such a thing, but it usually never works out when a coach makes these kind of veiled threats.

Its as simple as one broken play and Cornish rips pp a 70 yd run, but only gets 60 on 12 other carries...then what? You have players literally worried about their jobs because they know the hammer is coming.

I actually expect a riders win, but if that happens even with JC running well, what sort of message would that send?

Since the calendar turned to August Cornish has rushed for

170
43
159
71
185
53

See a pattern?

I wasn't talking about his threat, i'm not a fan of it. My outrageous comment was purely about the number, 100 yards. The defense should be trying to keep a RB well under that limit anyways.

Dumb comments from a dumb coach. What if idiot players start doing extra curricular stuff, they know they have to do something to keep jobs. It's almost like a bounty, either keep him 100 yards or your job is gone.

Way too many knee injuries on both sides, i wonder why.

The Stamps haven't lost in regulation at Mosaic Stadium since November 7, 2009 and are on seven-game win streak against the Riders.

Looks like QB Darian Durant will be the starting QB for the Riders today. Still no word if either DE Stevie Baggs or Returner Jason Armstead will be in the lineup.

I heard last night that neither Baggs or Armstead will play. Things could change but I doubt we see them today.

Ohhh CFL, I love you, but FFS how can you continue to give the Riders BS calls like that?? Clearly a fumble, clearly recovered by Calgary...WTF...

Only possible thing is they must have decided that he had possession while the ball was against his leg when he was on the ground?

CFL should have to release a statement explaining each ruling after the game.

Riders O looks decent though

Between the CFL and NFL this season, I'm not sure I've seen worse officiating in all my time watching football.

Is it just me, or did the sneak not cross the goal line?

No big surprise. I don't see any way the Riders can beat us without the refs handing them the game, but we're in Mosaic today, so that's just what they'll try to do.
