I wouldn't call leather cat proof, the nicks show up worse probably than cloth.

I've read these are good for that: http://www.amazon.com/Sticky-Paws-Fu.../dp/B000633Y0E
Sticky surface, cats don't like it, they learn to avoid the furniture, then you can take it off.

Not to get too far off topic, but...
As a cat owner and also an ex-furniture sales person, I would suggest you stick with leather.
It might mark a little easier, but it's also infinitely more durable in terms of ripping or shredding and is able to be repaired, where as a lot of microfiber or vinyl couches are pooched once they're ripped.

Great to hear, thanks. I think I was mostly thinking of the fabric couches being used as a scratching post more than the claw marks on the top (it's also one reason I'd rather not go out and drop the cash on something new).

Either that or just ban the cats from my part of the house...nah I can't resist kittens.

My cats don't use my leather couch for a scratching post, but they do use it as a run way and launch pad. Especially the kitten. It is less than a year old, and looks not so good anymore.
