It is soon time for a new fence. The current fence is 5ft high, but I want to make it 6 ft. high for more privacy. The fence is attached to metal poles that are affixed into a cement base that runs along the back of my yard. So, changing the poles is going to be highly expensive. I would like to re-use the existing poles but I am wondering if I can. The poles are 46" high (just 2" shy of 4 feet). The current fence is 5 feet. Do you think they'll properly support the fence if I go with a 6 foot fence? I can't see why not, but I'm no expert so I ask the collective brain trust of CP in hopes that a fencing guru will be able to help me out.

I am assuming it is a chain link fence?

If so, you can extend the pole with an extender and I can't imagine there being any issues.

No, it isn't a chain link fence. It is a wooden fence attached to metal fence posts that are attached to a cement base. Similar to what this picture shows:

So my fence is shorter, hence the poles are shorter.

The extenders you link to may work in a pinch, but they are not as thick.

An extra foot of fence hight isn't going to make a bit of difference to those metal poles, especially if they are buried in concrete like the pic you posted. I wouldn't worry about it at all unless you get insanely high winds in your area.

Box in your posts, makes the finished fence look much better

2 - 2x4's and 2 2x6's put on a 6" cap on the top to seal it up.

the 2x4's sit on the inside of the 2x6's to make a 6" square...If you need a better Idea how to do it go to rona sales desk and ask em how to do it and the screws you will need to attach the 2 x4 board to the poll. Sound complicated but really all you need is an impact drill to screw into the polls of you don't have pre drilled holes already.

Yes, I live in Lethbridge, and the wind is what made me question whether or not I could get away with it. I like return to the red's idea. I hadn't even thought of that. I was too stuck on thinking of doing the same thing to keep costs down. Boxing in the posts won't add a significant cost compared to redoing everything.
