Will You Buy Windowless Bedroom Condo?
http://www.calgarysun.com/2012/09/11...oms-in-calgary
I think the article is referral to Emeral Sky in Kincora, you can see the floor plan of these windowless bedroom here (near the bottom of the page).

It's not so much of a fire hazard concern for me but psychologically I don't think I like it. The windowless bedrooms will be a great place to discipline kids like unruly prisoners.

Isn't it against code for a bedroom not to have a window?
No, no I wouldn't.

In other provinces, don't they just not install a door and call it an 'office'? I have no problem buying one, but not for someone to live in there full time.
More important to me is who the builder is and how the condo board will be run.

My wife would love it. Her eye lids are transparent and needs it to be dark in order to sleep.
Not for me tho, I like my neighbours to be able to watch me walk around in the buff.

i could not mimagine sleeping full time in a room with no exterior window.
if a persona was sleeping in there and let out a fart, it would hover in the room for hours with no fresh air coming into the room.

I'm pretty sure this only applies to single family homes. I believe that there are different rules, especially when multi story building are concerned. For example, the reason to have a window is for a secondary route of escape in case of fire. On the 30th floor of a building, a window isn't a secondary route of escape anyway.

Doesn't really seem like a problem to me, as long as it's not a safety hazard. Some people might prefer it for sleeping (particularly shift workers), or to use as a photography studio, or for a TV projector... nobody is forced to buy these units, so I say let the market decide.

From a Herald article:
The provincial safety codes gave the OK to suites with windowless bedrooms in 2006, as long as they’re protected by sprinklers, and marketers say the lower-cost units sell well.

Sure are a lot of experts on the 'code' here who didn't bother to read the article.

Brian Stoddard, Carlisle’s president, said the design of the condo and townhouse complex adheres to the building codes, but he also said some rooms of the three-bedroom units won’t have windows.

If the third bedroom in a 3 bedroom unit doesn't have a window, it doesn't seem like a huge deal.

Public perception will affect resale. If public perception is that first thought is that it is against code, then that is a big negative for me

I would do that, I imagine that you would be able to redesign the whole apartment/condo allowing a much bigger window area in the living/kitchen area, which is where the majority of my time is spent anyway.

I doubt thats the case. This is all about cost cutting. Checkout the website for the Kincora condos in the first pos. The main page says 2 bedroom condos from the $120's. You're not getting bigger windows elsewhere in the unit in return for giving up a window in the second bedroom.
$120k for a new 2 bedroom condo in Calgary in 2012? These are going to be crappy buildings and a lack of windows is just another factor that will have a huge impact on the quality of life of those living there. The comment that this is a warehouse for people is pretty bang on. Give these buildings 10 years and they will look like public housing projects in a big city. You likely have many of these being rentals with the 2nd bedroom belonging to kids. Sounds like a bad scenario.

Put a blow out window in case of a fire. Otherwise I want my bed room as dark as a black hole when I'm sleeping.
so yes I would

The 2 bedrooms that will be available for that price are 615 square feet. The first phase (building 2000) has 4 units of that type, which are probably already sold.

These Kincora condos are being built by the Carlisle Group, aka Point of View version 2.0. I'd give them a wide berth.

This.
I've been looking at places, and really, if the bedroom doesn't have a window, then it's really just a den and should be called such.

I think some CP members live in the colours building downtown. There are a few floor plans in there that have bedrooms with no exterior windows. Despite the initial savings the article claims it passes on, are those savings worth the struggle to sell down the road? not IMO
