Calgary fire captain gets his job back
http://www.calgarysun.com/2012/09/10...scene-comments
Quote:
“I’m sorry, I forgot you were here,” is how a witness described Hendricks’ awkward apology, after realizing he was speaking in the presence of a female firefighter.
The real remorse came in the weeks following the March 2011 incident, which escalated into a full-fledged investigation resulting in the 33-year veteran being fired.
According to arbitration papers, Hendricks was filling in for another captain when he blurted forth the unwelcome monologue with obscene vagina references.
He apparently wanted to know why three of the force’s 30 female firefighters were stationed at one hall, but he chose language deemed insulting and derogatory to describe the women.
“During our drive back to the station, Captain Hendricks asked the question ‘Why is there so many (expletives) at your hall?’” the lone female firefighter testified.

So he uses the word c*** and some idiot female fire fighter gets her panties in a knot and makes a big deal over nothing.

Sorry you can't go around calling women C Units in a workplace setting, especially if you are a manager or in a position of responsibility. I get that it is a unique work environment but at the same time that is unacceptable, especially for a public servant.

Using misogynistic language in a professional work environment is not "nothing".
You probably should have also quoted this part of the article. It sounds like the accused captain himself is treating the incident seriously and is genuinely apologetic for his actions:
Quote:
“I cannot tell you how horrible I feel about my senseless and very unprofessional conduct on March 1,” reads an excerpt from the letter Hendricks wrote.
“I am sorry that I caused pain and embarrassment to the CFD family ... Please forgive me, and go forward as a very proud, professional CFD family, the one I was once a proud member of, and truly wish I could be again.”
The ex-captain also pleaded with his former co-workers to cease “internal fighting within the CFD family,” in reference to threatening calls allegedly made to the three female firefighters at the station.
Hendricks signed the long letter with “A very remorseful Chuck Hendricks,” and that apparently sincere apology earned the captain his job back.

lol c***.
If this was England he'd get a high five.
Seriously though. Pretty dumb to talk like that in the workplace. Especially in the presence of a female. I don't know if firing the capitan is the best course of action. I'm assuming that it takes decades of experience to reach that role and it's not easily replaceable.
What he did was bad but losing your career over it is quite a punishment.

How was this good of an OP (puckluck) allowed back so soon? It's obvious he needs another decade of maturing before he can be a positive asset to this community ...

So bashing on religion is a no-no, but you're cool with calling women c**ts? Puckluck, you've finally out-done yourself.

He didn't specifically call her a c***. He made a reference to females as c***.
Of course calling her specifically a c*** is a big no-no, but it's not such a big deal to be fired over and thankfully they agreed and gave him his job back.

What else would he say? He would have to say this regardless in order to get his job back. I highly doubt his attitude will change much, if at all, he'll just be a lot more careful about who is around when he is talking.

Oh! that's better then. He didn't call one female that, he called three of them that.
I see how that's... better?

I dont know what kind of argument can be made here. The Captain himself understands what he did was wrong and apologized. Thats inappropriate language and treatment of employees in any industry.
Pretty cut and dried, and, quite honestly, I think the female firefighter had a right to be offended initially as theres no call for that sort of behaviour and should be commended for being reasonable enough to accept his apology and allow him to have his job back.
If she really was an unreasonable person she could have denied his apology and Chuck would still be out of work.

Who am I? An older fellow who knows to slowly integrate himself into a community and not always cause waves and be "that guy". A lesson you have obviously not learned. I was here for the tail end of your rein as puckluck and was pleased to see you banned. I was hopeful you would learn but it's obvious your combative, rude approach is engrained behaviour and you will never be a positive addition to this community.
So yes, based on the positive vibe here after I saw you banned, I think I can say I know what's "best" for the community. Judging by other replies, I am not alone.

I was expecting the standard "I'm sorry if you were offended" non-apology. I was impressed that he sounded genuinely remorseful and realizes that his behaviour is completely unacceptable in a professional working environment.
