Default WEEK 10: Labour Day Classics Battle of Alberta version

Labour Day Classic and the Battle of Alberta. I love this game and always enjoy watching it. Calgary Stampders dominated the Labour Day Classics in the 90s winning 6 straight games from 1993 to 1998. But since then the bad guys Edmonton Eskimos got the edge winning 8 of the last 13 games.

OFFENSE:

RB Jon Cornish just won the Canadian Player of the Month of July and Canadian Player of Week 9. Cornish rushed for 159 yards against the Riders and most of the yardages were in the first half.

Rookie receiver Joe West played his first CFL game and caught his first catch and first TD on his first game(34 yards touchdown pass from QB Kevin Glenn against the Saskatchewan Roughriders). Joe West ended up with 5 catches for 68 yards on the game. Receiver Romby Bryant also caught his first TD of the season and ended up with 5 catches for 52 yards. QB Kevin Glenn was not bad on the Stamps win vs the Riders throwing 2 TDs. He had a turnover free on the game and he managed to score most of the Stamps points while they were against the wind.

DEFENSE:

DL Charleston Hughes have to repeat his performance against the Riders this week against the Edmonton Eskimos. Hughes earned the Defensive Player of the Week 9 with 2 QB sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 1 interceptions. With all that effort, Coach Devone Claybrook only gave him 5 out 10 on Claybrooks' scale.

DL Kenny Pettway will replace the injured (done for the season maybe) Chris McCoy in chasing Steven Jyles or Kerri Joseph. The whole DLine and LBs will also have to put up with the 3 headed monsters of the Eskimos running game with the addition of RB Jerome Messam on the lineup. So, they will have to stop a power RB Cory Boyd and Messam and also try to contain the slick and faster Hugh Charles.

Stamps Defense allowed just 10 points vs the Riders and 3 straight games they allowing 22 points or less. The Stamps are 5th best in points allowed and 5th in rushing yards allowed.

DB Quincy Butler practiced this week but still questionable against the Eskimos. DB Tad Kornegay been practicing on a first rep ahead of Butler.

SPECIAL TEAM:

Stamps punting and kickoff were good last few games. Punter Rob Maver had an excellent game considering the wind was so extreme. In the 4th quarter, he punted for 33, 36 & 36 yards against the wind keeping the field goal position to Calgary advantage late in the game.

************************************************** ************

I can assume that the Eskimos will be trying the ball most of the time with Messam, Boyd and Hughes. Their QB Jyles has been struggling and Joseph was okay last game. Calgary defense will have to force Jyles or Joseph to throw the ball in a hurry or try not to give the RBs some running room in order to beat them. Stamps offense should continue mixing up their plays especially early in the game. Give Cornish the ball a lot and see how the Esks defense responds. Let the games begin! GO STAMPS GO!!!!!!

GAME TIME: Monday, September 3rd at 2:30pm McMahon Stadium

TV: The game will be televised live on TSN. For the fans in the US, the game can be seen live on NBCSN. It can also be seen via webcast on ESPN3.

Joseph will start at QB for Edmonton as Jyles had a set back during practice this week. First of 4 games vs the Esks. Just based on how the season has played out so far, the Stamps likely need 3 of 4 from Edmonton to host a playoff game.

The Sun is reporting that only 32000 are expected to show up. Really? We can't sell out the Labour Day game anymore? I guess the premium game prices are keeping fans away.

Of course I write this from the friendly confines of my couch...

Looks like the Stamps are wearing last years black bib jerseys. Wonder why they couldn't make a new jersey?

I can't find anyone to go to the games with me, not much interest in the Stamps these days it seems. It doesn't help that McMahon Stadium is a complete dump.

Looks like Taylor fell down on that Glenn throw...Eskimos football.

Edit: Upon further review, just a bad throw.

That was an awful throw by Kevin Glenn. Come on Larry Taylor is probably 5'6" and it looks you are throwing to a 6'7" receiver.

On just about every play it looks like at least one receiver is on the run across the neutral zone but there is rarely a flag.
