and we have to wait until 2008 to get ours? Way to stay in the dark ages, Bronconnier. Why is it that the politicians cowtow to less than 25% of the population? Heck, even when I smoked I wouldn't have minded the fact that I could actually breathe when I went to the bar/pub. Does the food and beverage industry think that the other 75% of the population don't go out as well? Heck, you might get some new customers!! California has had a ban well over 10 years now and guess what? They still have bars and restaurants there! Get with the times, Calgary. Our brothers and sisters to the north have figured it out.

Agreed.
Smokers make me sick (literally, although not like an allergy or anything) and i have simply stopped going to smoking establishments altogether. Sometimes it seems like a bit of a sacrifice but the few times i have broken my rule i have been reminded strongly the next morning when i have a sore throat and i smell worse then shinguard when i wash my hair out in the shower...

Just imagine what Nashville North at Stampede would be like with a smoking by-law....FRESH AIR! Where will the chain-smoking rednecks go have their puff?

What should REALLY embarass Calgarians is the fact you need to go inside to smoke, as you can't do in on a patio. Talk about a assed-backwards rule.

YOU GUYS DON'T HAVE THAT?!?!?!?
Wow, it's been a few ~years~ since the anti-smoking bylaws were inplace here in Nova Scotia. Since July 1, 2001 I think. I remember coming home after a Friday night, and the next day my parents would ALWAYS comment on how my jacket smelled like smoke. In the wash it would go, only to do the same thing after Saturday night, haha.
I find it hard to imagine being in a bar with smoke now, just seems wrong.

When I was a smoker I thought it was a dumb ass law that would bankrupt a pile of establishments.
Now I believe the exact opposite is true. It seems there are MORE people at these places. I cant stand going into any place that has or allows smokers.
I wonder why they dont just start up private smokers clubs...like Cigar clubs...where people pay a fee to enter at their own risk?

I purposly avoid going to places that allow smoking. Its just disgusting. all because 25% want to smoke where ever they want affecting everyone around them. Bars are the worst. One of the main reasons I wont go if I can help it at all.
Calgary really needs to rethink there stance on this. Its better for everyone involved. I refuse to go to a restaruant if there is smoking...

I agree, I have no idea why we're taking so long to change over.
Really, do people actually go to bars just to smoke?
Besides I know enough people who only smoke when drinking, and hopefully that'll cut down on them too...
Smoking is one of the hardest things I have over here, people can light up anywhere, I hate it.

I actually LOVE that law.
It was horrible before - where non-smoking restaurants had no policy at all for their patio's which essentially meant it was a crap shoot. So you could be enjoying a nice glass of wine on a sunny afternoon and then the table from hell would sit down up-wind from you and the experience was ruined...

Obviously you've not been to Europe. This place is like California in terms of it's restrictions compared.
I'm an ex smoker, have been so for near two years now without a puff, I hear your arguments for public places, I don't really have a problem with it. I just find it a bit laughable and hypocritical that there's so much pressure on anti smoking but sorrosis (sp?) of the liver is essentially encouraged, it's an hillarious double standard. Anything alcohol gets a free ride. In Alberta and what I've seen of BC the tolerance levels for drink driving (I mean socially let alone legally) are like the middle ages!
Sure if you smoke in front of me, I may be affected. But if you drink and start a fight and glass me I am also affected, or if you climb in a car and drink drive there's an unreasonable risk of affecting me. There should be 0 tolerance for any alcohol level and it should be a criminal offense, when driving. But all the alcohol issues are never looked at, only smoking, I wish a tenth of the effort put into smoking was put into drink related issues.
Smoking laws may be behind here, but they're catching up don't worry.

^^^The difference is the fact that smoking directly impacts people around you negatively. You make the decision to smoke - it hurts me.
The other scenarios you outline above require two things to happen.
1. I drink
2. I drive or I get in a fight or whatever
There is not direct consequence from the alcohol itself.
So I don't think its a double standard though I would agree that stiffer DUI penalties would be great.

I have some mild smoke allergies and yes, our delay on the issue is bewildering and ass-backwards IMO. But I'm moving to a city that does have some sense in the fall.

yeah, this is a point of serious embarrassment for Calgary. Three freakin years away. Like Cheese said, there should be private establishments like cigar clubs, or like marijuana is handled in some parts of europe.

I have no problem with there not being a smoking ban. I enjoy smoking in bars and hate when I go to BC and have to go outside. I'm glad that I haven't heard anything about changing the by-laws down here.

it's amazing to think that where I live has been "smoke-free" sort of speak for 3-4 years not, and you're 3 years away from it. That's a considerable amount of time, and I would think the smoking rates are higher here than in a city like Calgary.

Nope, not embarresed at all.
I think it is a stupid law to begin with. It's just a matter of the gov't interferring with the personal lives of its citizens. If you don't smoke, fine, don't go to establishments that allow smoking. If you do smoke, fine, then go to establishments that allow smoking. Leave the decision up to the people to make, that is one of the core ideals of democracy. Let the people decide, not a lobby group.
As far as no smoking out side is obsured. I would really like to see a study on the number of people that don't smoke, that have developed lung, or throat cancer, due to second hand smoke, while working with smokers in an out door environment.

As a smoker I have to say, Calgarys smoking by-laws are by far the worst of any city I have lived in, or travelled to for that matter. If I want a smoke, I can make my way outside, it isn't that hard. But forcing me inside? Well that's just a$$ backwards.
