No friends with trucks? Pizza and beer is a lot cheaper than a moving company.

A moving company is typically faster and won't call you up to ask them to move.
I recently used a company called Super Duper Movers...reasonably priced/speedy/took good care of our stuff.

I used http://www.tsmmoving.com/ (Total Service Moving) last time. They moved us from Hanna, AB to Olds, AB and were there when they said they were going to be (9:00 AM). They loaded up and finished delivering by 8:00 PM in Olds.
I was really happy. The Bill was around $2,800, and I admit I didn't pay.
If I was moving myself and had to pay then I would uHaul it.

For such a short move between locations that, I am assuming, are under 1400sq ft, why bother with movers at all though?
They are $$$$.
I used one PODS container (packed like a sardine can) and a Kia Rio Hatchback (also packed like a sardine can) to move the contents of a 1500 sq ft home across the country.
I've used them for local moves as well. You do all the packing and unpacking yourself, but if you don't have the time to do everything in one day, it doesn't cost any more if you spend a week packing or unpacking.

well the biggest reason that i am looking for a moving company vs. moving with friends and a uhaul is i get possession of my new place the day before my wedding.
I was hoping to get the major furniture items moved in that same day, so that I can have guests stay over, rather than booking hotel rooms.
I am just doing a cost benefit analysis to see if this is even an option.

unfortunately none of my friends drive trucks. Probably because they would be getting called all the time to help with moves.. plus they're mostly asian

Just do this:
Get a PODS container dropped off at your current address a week before your wedding. Pack it ahead of time.
You can either leave it on the street out front of your residence (if there is street parking allowed and you ok it with the city bylaw office). Or you can have them collect the POD and hold it in storage until you want it dropped off at your new home.
Schedule the delivery of the POD at your new home for whenever it works for your plans. If you packed it smart, you can just fish out the items you need to accommodate guests (so that you're not spending the entire day trying to move everything) and leave the rest in the POD until the wedding weekend is over and you can tackle the rest of it at your leisure.
It doesn't matter how many days you have the POD in your possession (within reason). You are charged for Pick up and Delivery of it and by the distance between moving locations and that's it.

Anyone have a recommendation for moving to another city? So far I am getting quotes from AMJ Campbell and Premiere Van Lines.

The company I used a couple of posts prior or Two Small Men.
It will be a cold day in hell before I use AMJ again. They sprung next day delivery on us after they loaded the truck after being four hours late to begin with.
They may be cheaper, but stay away!

We used Tippet-Richardson when we moved, and they did a fairly good job. The bonus was that they finished sooner than they had estimated. They are probably more expensive than other movers out there.

I don't think you could really "just fish out" beds and sofas from a POD that is packed like a sardine can. Plus I can see not wanting to deal with any kind of moving the day before his wedding.
I do have a crazy idea- do you have any friends who cannot really afford a good wedding present? Get 3 or 4 of them and have them rent a U-Haul and move everything. Heck- even if you pay the ~$150 for the U-Haul and get them to chip in the labour for the wedding gift; everybody still comes out ahead.

I moved just last week, took possession on Tuesday on the new place and gave up possession on the old place on Thursday. So I didn't have much time to move. Thankfully I've got a brother-in-law with a huge horse trailer, and a couple of friends with trucks who live for helping others move (perhaps I should mention that they may be a bit crazy). It took half the time to move than what I anticipated and we only had to use the horse trailer. My friends were disappointed that their trucks weren't needed. I just had to buy pizza and beer, and the even more fortunate part is that nobody drank beer so I got it all to myself!

I used 'Solidman Moving' last year after moving to my current place.
They were cheaper than any other quote I got... as well as: On-time, efficient, friendly, & they didn't break any of my crap.
Can't ask for much more than that.

Used Advantage moving (I think they have an ad on Kijiji) this weekend. 2 guys with a truck and a 5 tonne trailer. Moved all of our big furniture and some smaller pieces out and into the new house in less than 4 hours. PM me for price. (Really cheap!)
