Default Quebec’s election will cost us all money

So, remind me again why we want Quebec to stay in Canada?

Quote:
The Coalition Avenir Quebec has promised more doctors. Meanwhile, Parti Quebecois Leader Pauline Marois says that if her party is elected, tuition in Quebec will be free. She also wants 15,000 more daycare spaces.
The Liberal party under Premier Jean Charest says it will create a $1-billion fund so Quebec’s governments can make “strategic investments” in business (a.k.a., more corporate welfare). Also, Charest pledges to subsidize wages of Quebec workers older than age 55.
Quote:
From 2005/06 (as far back as publicly available Finance department data goes) up to the present year, Quebec has received $56.7 billion, or 54 per cent of the $107.4 billion the federal government spent on equalization.

Quote:
Quebec’s undergraduate tuition rates were just $2,519 this past year. That was 38 per cent of what an Ontario student paid ($6,640); 44 per cent of the cost to a student in Alberta ($5,662); 45 per cent of what a Saskatchewan student paid ($5,601); and 52 per cent of what a B.C. student shelled out ($4,852).
On physician ratios, in 2010, British Columbia and Alberta had 213 and 211 general physicians respectively per 100,000 people; the numbers for Ontario and Saskatchewan were 189 and 169. Meanwhile, the Quebec ratio was 224 general physicians per 100,000 people.

I am not sure that Quebec spending more money will translate into higher equalization payments. Unless you are speaking in a more macro sense in that the new policies will slow the growth of the Quebec economy relative to the rest of the country so that they will receive more in their new poorer state.

Wouldn't it be refreshing to hear a Quebec politician say "This province is in dire straits and this is what we need to do to fix it".

Pauline Marois has used the first Quebec election debate to repeatedly attack Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in a hint of federal-provincial battles that might follow the Sept. 4 vote.
From her opening remarks, and throughout the debate Sunday night, the Parti Quebecois Leader highlighted her strategy of confrontation with the Harper Tories and claimed she would hold a sovereignty referendum “tomorrow morning,” if she felt she could.
“I will never let Stephen Harper choose for us,” Marois said Sunday, in a reminder of spats with the Tories over employment insurance, justice policy and transfer payments.
The PQ has said that if it’s elected it will seek a transfer of powers from Ottawa in areas like employment insurance and immigration policy. The party says it will use each refusal from the Tories to build its case that Quebec doesn’t belong in Canada.

Quebec spending more money will result in an increase in their provincial tax rate to pay for the added expenditures. Increased taxes will result in a slower economy. A slower economy means higher equalization payments.

Does Quebec have a fiscal conservative running in their provincial election? Doesn't sound like it. They are a lot like Greece, they need massive spending cuts but the citizens are too selfish to realize it.

After having been to Montreal, my goal is now to try to send any future children to go to college there. World-class school (McGill) for piddly tuition and an awesome city for a college-aged kid. That's one fantastic place to live in your 20s...especially for a guy.

Isn't the tuition only cheap if you are from Quebec? I think they charge high tuition for out of province students.

Our country needs more Quebec. It should expand to take over Ontario.

If Quebec's attitude were to invade Ontario, Canada's problem wouldn't be Quebec separatists, but western separatists.

there would be no Canada if Quebec left, it's an essential element of the constitution i believe.

But yeah, it's very hard not to be pissed off at some of them!!

If for a change, you actually took the time to read the story (I posted the link) you would have seen that the headline I used was the headline in the Calgary Herald..

... but good try anyways.... maybe next time eh?

How would you feel about Quebec (or any other province) dictating economic policy in order to maximize revenues to Alberta?

In fact the last complain about Quebec thread was started less than a week ago on August 14, 2012 (here:http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=119783).

I know... but they're definitely in the news lately what with with the provincial election coming up and the party debates. ... and Marois is certainly playing the "woe is us/we're special" separtist card.
