Wife purchases are pretty common in some smaller, very rural, Alberta communities.

The last one I worked at had a few purchased bride situations, with maybe about 400 living in or around the community.

For those too lazy to click:

Quote:
Federal immigration officials are fighting a court battle to keep an Alberta man from bringing his Filipino wife to the country because they suspect their marriage is a fraud.

But Carwin Miltimore insists the young woman he met online four years ago married him out of love, not a desire to come to Canada.

A visa officer rejected the 60-year-old truck driver’s sponsorship application of his 22-year-old spouse because they felt their age difference made it improbable the relationship was genuine. But last fall an immigration appeal tribunal ruled in the Ryley man’s favour.

Quote:

“I’m 100 per cent sure that I’m not being duped. I’m not an idiot,” Miltimore said.

“When you talk to someone online every day for hours, you can see in their eyes and by the way they speak that they love you.”

In addition to $10,000 for legal bills, Miltimore has spent generously from his earnings to help Marife and her family with health care needs, a grandmother’s funeral and a new roof for her father’s home.

Innocent unless we suspect you're guilty, then guilty.

He is probably being duped but lots of guys and gals feel duped after getting married. Its not the call of the Immigration Officer to make that determination.

The Immigration Officer should be interested in whether or not the 62 year old AND the 20 year-old are working in concert to dupe the government.

A subtle difference.

I don't think the government cares if they are working together or not. It is most certainly their job to find out if he's being duped.

They are trying to protect Canada from having foreigners marry Canadian citizens just so they can move to Canada. It is most certainly there job to help find out if he's being duped and deny her immigration based on those findings.
