I know my view isn't likely popular on this, but what a shame. I think that Augusta should've been able to do what they wanted and having a men only group isn't that big of a deal.

I'll agree that they should be able to do whatever they wanted, and there's nothing wrong with a men's club.
However, I think they are doing what they want, even now.

Augusta National Golf Club, a private club, has about 300 members at any given time. Membership is strictly by invitation; there is no application process.
Augusta invited and accepted an African-American member for the first time in 1990 following a controversy at Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club, an all-white golf club in Alabama, who also refused membership to black players and faced demands that the PGA Championship not be held there following racial comments by the club's founder.

Does anybody actually know how many members actually play Augusta regularly? I assume the majority or their members are not Augusta residents (or even Georgia residents for that matter). and I assume that many of their local members are old timers. I am curious how many rounds are played a day there? i cant imagine it is that busy (or that they care).

No idea, but I do know that the golf course is open only about seven months out of the year. It shuts down in late May, about six weeks after The Masters, and doesn't reopen until mid-October.

Many memberships are held by high-level executives in major corporations. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that they have in the neighborhood of 300 rounds play per year (not sure if this is individual rounds or foursomes)

Would the feminists be outraged if this was a women's only club?

Why is it a big deal if women play?

A private club should be permitted to do whatever it wants, hence why places like Curves and the YWCA do not allow men. Which is why Augusta owed it to nobody to invite women. Sexist? Maybe, but anymore so than Curves or the YWCA? Not really. Don't like it? Too bad, because private clubs are permitted to do as they please.

I don't have any problem with them playing...somewhere else. I just don't see what the big deal is though. Women can go and do their thing, set-up a golf club (or whatever it might be) and have only women. No one would have any issue with it. Same should be with Augusta National.

Perhaps because now they have to build a whole set of ladies tee boxes and now when a member fails to drive the ball past the ladies markers he has to drop his shorts?

Slava: Do you have the same opinion regarding white-only golf courses? I mean, blacks or asians or latinos could go set up their own golf courses if they so wished, eh?

Where exactly have you gotten this idea that they are doing anything they don't want to do?

Yeah, because buying a substantial amount of land, developing a course, paying maintenance fees, etc., is much easier than some old white dudes just letting girls play on their course with them.

No, but lets extrapolate my thoughts about one thing to encompass every horrible thing that should be allowed.

I just think that the bullying and pushing has been going on for years (1992 IIRC).

Its just nonsensical though. If I want to open a "mens only ______" on my own dime and it becomes viewed as elite and a status symbol of sorts then its basically none of the medias/general publics business. Same goes for women opening up various types of clubs and not allowing men. I might wish to be a part of these clubs, but its not unfair just because its not open to everyone.
I know that people don't care to admit this, but there are all kinds of organizations that deny membership based on sex, money, occupation, etc. The fact that Augusta didn't have women as members isn't original.

Cubs and Scouts used to be like that and it was fine because the girls had Brownies and Girl Guides... and then someone decided that it was discrimitory to the girls to not let them play with the boys... whats with that?

Private schools are a good example that no one seems to have much issue with.
