Default The Tennis Thread 2012

Our heroes are back in action. In Chennai for the first ATP Tour event of the season.

Both Pospisil and Raonic in the draw.

http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2012/891/mds.pdf

Goal for the year? I think if Milos can get to top 15 and Vasek to top 50 it would be an amazing year.

Plus that Davis Cup thing in Vancouver in a month.

I plan on following tennis much more this year. Gotta get in the right mindset for my Davis Cup trip. Plus the fact I have been playing once a week throughout the winter has been keeping tennis on the brain! Really hope Canadians make a big splash this year and win a couple of events

Pospisil is out, lost in the 1st round to Beck(GER) 63-76(8).
He gets 12 points for qualifying though

How does the seeded players portion work? I see Raonic is seeded 4th? I am assuming there was a qualifying round pre tourney?

Raonic is seeded 4th simply because he's the 4th highest ranked player in the tournament.

#1. Tipsarevic 9
#2. Almagro 10
#3. Wavwrinka 17
#4. Raonic 31

No big names in this tournament. I think they're in Doha, Qatar.

Pospisil wasn't ranked high enough to be directly put into the tournament so he had to qualify (won 3 matches!). I think the cutoff was ranking #101.

Milos awaits the winner of Sugita/Almagro in the semis. This is a real opportunity for him!

Milos has a good chance, it's a very fast hardcourt in Chennai and Almagro is more of a dirtballer.

He looked really good this morning - Raonic almost seems faster than last season. Some early season success really bodes well for Canada and the Davis Cup. Nothing wrong with a confidence booster like this!

Good to see Milos starting the year off so strong. Could make some noise at the Aussie open.

Would be nice to see Pospisil be a little more active this year, hopefully he can get a result or two and pick up the cash and ranking increase to travel a little more. Wonder if him and Dancevic are going to try to qualify in Melbourne.

edit - just took a look at Vasek's twitter and him and Polansky are for sure hitting the Aussie open qualifiers, not sure about Dancevic, seems to have gone inactive.

No Dancevic is too bad. He qualified for all 4 grand slams last year.

Don't think Polansky is there either, his ranking the 275ish

Pospisil and Ludovic-Duclos are in the qualifying draw. Chvojka is an alternate.

What a match! It really brought out the best in both players. Tipsarevic has had to live in Djokovic's shadow for a long time, but he's a very talented player. This three setter almost took 3.5 hours. Talk about a hard fight battle.

Interesting fact I found on Twitter:
The @milosraonic 35 aces 5th-most in #ATP final since '91. #Federer hit 50 in '09 @Wimbledon final. MR hit 76 aces & not broken in 48 gms.

Now I can't wait for the Australian Open!
