Default CBC wins rights to 2014, 2016 Olympic Games

I hope this isn't a fata.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/...cs-rights.html

Quote:
CBC/Radio-Canada has won the Canadian media rights for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Kinda surprising that with the budgets cuts CBC has been facing that they went after these games and then were actually able to win the rights.

I also wonder how CBC will be able to handle coverage of such large events as CBC has been covering less and less sports over the years.

Clearly the savings will be in the production value.

CTV has several channels at their disposal and a huge arsenal of broadcasters. CTV has been constantly showing events on their channel and on TSN and Sportsnet, can CBC do this?

CBC has a more emotional twist to their coverage, CTV/TSN has always made it look beautiful. Personally CTV's coverage in Vancouver and so far in London has been amazing, I'm leery to think CBC can do the same.

Well, once CBC loses the rights to show Hockey Night in Canada or any NHL games, they'll need to do something with their sports crew

The only thing truly missing from CTV's coverage is Ron McLean. The guy is one of the best hosts in the broadcasting game, second to none. When he opens his mouths and starts giving his opinon I want to beat the poop out of him... but as a host.. one of the best.

CTV misses an anchor to bring all the coverage together, it's what CBC has. They know how to tell a story.

So will it just be on one channel then? Limited coverage?

My guess is they'll throw up some coverage to Sportsnet like CTV/TSN has done the past two Olympics. I don't see what other options there are. CBC Country Canada for Curling again?

This sucks. CTV has done a tremendous job with the last two Olympics

If they can get Ron McLean and Jann Arden to do the opening parade the same way they did the Calgary Stampede parade, I'm in - that was hilarious!

I highly doubt they will go with the "Consortium" or whatever it is called. They will brodcast on CBC, BOLD, Live Streaming and the French channel. Yes I miss Ron Mac, but the coverage has been great and it is always nice to hear Paul Romaniuk. I think CTV brought Brian Williams over for Olympic coverage. I am already looking forwrad to Jay and Dan coming up with all sorts of mischief when it comes time to show the hilights that they will not have the rights for.

They have already said that they are looking to sub out some of the coverage.

I expect they'll pass some coverage off to other stations. For Beijing, TSN had 150 hours of coverage and I think we'll see something similar. At least I hope so.

While TSN is out for now, I think they'll get back in just so they can show highlights on SportsCentre. Always sucks just showing the still photos.

You guys speak of CBC like their ancient. They covered Beijing only 4 years ago and it was fine, they used TSN to help. And they covered the 10 Olympics before that and we all loved it.

The coverage will be fine and we'll get our old commentating duos back again.

Ugh. Count me among the disappointed, CTV/TSN does such a good job with this. Sad to see the world's premier sporting event sent to a second rate broadcaster.
