In a surprise move, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced his resignation Monday evening.Just one year after winning a third mandate, Mr. McGuinty called his caucus together around the dinner hour at Queen's Park. With his wife, Terri, sitting in the front row, he said he plans to step down as Premier and as leader of the Liberal Party. He will hold on to his seat in the legislature, representing Ottawa South.
Seems like odd timing, could he maybe be thinking of the federal leadership?

Energy Minister Chris Bentley is already facing a rare censure over his refusal to release documents to a legislative committee last May. The Finance Committee has until Nov. 19 to determine whether he should be held in contempt. The controversy surrounding the cancelled projects deepened on Friday after the government released another 20,000 pages of documents that were not identified as part of the initial search.
With the legislature now prorogued, all business grinds to a halt, including the move to find Mr. Bentley in contempt of parliament.
It's like watching a drunken grandfather lavishly gift to his children and their children, against his inhertied fortune until it was gone. And then he vanishes.
Unfortunately, Primier McGunty gets to live rich instead of in poverty of the most poetically just.
I'm starting to think that too. With the Ledge prorogued they avoid the contempt charges and the committees are shut down. When the new session is started they will probably lose a confidence motion which will again shut down the investigation. That's a bit of a conspiracy theory but it's pretty bizarre that he would step down at this time without some sort of reason.
With this coming the same day as news of the Energy Minister's handling of the Mississauga Power Plant, I have to think that these are related and that Bentley will be the next one to go.

I am not sure I understand this power plant thing. Okay.. He cancelled an unpopular power plant for political gain to preserve his possession of power as premier. Too many p's in that sentence. That cancellation will cost a minimum of 190 million.. And the opposition suggests that could go as high as 650 million. That I understand. But I don't remember this power plant being that big of a deal in the election. Power.. And the overall cost of electricity was a huge issue, but I don't remember this cancellation being brought up all that much. Maybe I was totally out to lunch... And I must admit if it was brought up I think most people in Ontario could have given a flying hoot if the plan went ahead as scheduled. Perhaps it was more of a local issue in a few key ridings. Maybe the bigger issue is the coverup after the election.
LOL. He would have roughly as much chance to win the leadership and become PM as yours truly.
Agreed, but people stupidly jump into campaigns all the time. Not saying it will happen, not saying he has any chance to win (thank God), but that the pieces are certainly more in place than you would have thought.

Bentley's already being touted as a possible replacement, unfortunately.
Can't believe he was voted in 3 times.
Although last time wouldn't have happened if Hudak wasn't an idiot.

I also think that Tory would have crushed him if not for bringing up faith-based schools. That is what destroyed the PCs that election if I recall correctly. It's too bad because I think that Tory would have been a damn good Premier. Frankly, I am not fond of any of McGuinty's potential replacements. I don't really like Hudak and Horwath seems to be in lala land.
With the PCs squandering two good opportunities in a row to a vulnerable Premier, I have to wonder if it's the brains behind the party and not the leaders themselves that are the issues. Both times it has looked good for the PCs for quite a while only for them to falter towards the end.

Agreed that John Tory probably would have been the best choice, but the Tories blew two chances to get him a seat when all they had to do was run him in safe riding. Hudak seemed smart until he started opening up his mouth.
There's been a problem with the PCs since Harris left.
I'm a bit too young to remember the Harris years, but when I hear of people reflecting upon them, they never seem to do it with any fondness. You are right however, there has been a problem with the PCs. The Premiership has been ripe for the picking these past two elections and they blew it both times. It is shocking that Dalton managed to stick as Premier for 9 years.

The vocal groups (unions, social activists) hated Harris but he did a lot of what he campaigned for; you could argue that he cut too much too fast but a lot of it imo was needed to get spending under control.
Also, McGuinty blamed a good amount of his broken campaign promises on Harris, which didn't help.
Unfortunately with the way McGuinty spent money, another Harris may be needed.
